These decorators recommend turning books in bookcase backward???? For neutral look!!

This is a weird thing to comment on but it seemed to me to be an insane way of decorating a house.  I thumbed through the Country Home magazine and saw this picture of a decorated room.  Notice the fact that they have turned ALL the books in the bookcase so that you can't see their spines, just the pages, and this gives the background in the room a nice neutral look!  So they explained.

Holy smokes!  What will decorators think of next?  Obviously the decorator was not one who reads and loves books.  It's almost like years ago when people bought the nice sets of classics just for the pretty sets to put in the bookshelves.  Do any of you like this look?

Lois, you are right.  I just couldn't see it as making any sense.  The decorator obviously is not a book lover! Thanks for finding this blog and commenting.

For the nth time I saw a decorator in a TV show create a large wall of bookshelves with every book spine turned away. I'm a literacy educator and this idea makes me crazy!! Any decorator who would do that has to be alliterate. I will be selling my home soon and I'll be darned if we will turn our book spines back. I have, however covered books. Even that is somehow not so great. Here it is 2013 and I just found your blog - great chance to vent!

Judith, I agree with you!  No true reader or book lover would treat books this way. Thanks for joining me in my complaint!

I love it!

My dad used to have a special room where all walls were covered with books and I spent most of my childhood there...

I was surprised at how old this discussion is and yet designers/stagers still insist on turning the books backwards...almost every blog/discussion agree that it is just ridiculous...cohesive?....not in my "book"! To me it looks messy and uninteresting. If books are only a design element, the designer should take the time to use cover colors and arrangements that compliment the other decor in the room. If they are the owners books, a little thought in the arrangement should give the cohesive look desired. Like the "duck lips" selfie, the backward books should gooooo!

Mindy O.  You are so right.  This is an old blog but has had many many people look at it.  When I wrote it books were more valuable.  Now the books are seemingly being thrown away.  Times are really changing.

I hate the look. To me this goes hand in hand with the dumbing down of America.

Chandra, I love books and sounds as if you do too.  But now a book that sells for $25 new won't bring $1 in the second hand market and I agree with you that it makes me sad.

It looks weird. Maybe they are embarrassed about the titles. Looks off. Put em in right or not at all. I have over 300 books and all the spines show.

Judy, I agree.  I have always loved books and can't imagine someone doing this just for the look.

When I see books like this, it leaves me with the impression that the decorator is illiterate.

Don, it makes me think that she/he was the beginning of an awful time now where no one cares about books!  It was written in 2008 when books were still loved!  Now we can hardly give them away!

You can’t choose a book to read if you can’t see what it is. Decorators are also supposed to think of function. Seeing what the book is is more important than a neutral bookcase.

I had to chime in on this conversation! Even though this topic was started years ago, it still makes me crazy! All my favorite design shows feature bookshelves with the books turned backwards! So ridiculous! Joanna Gaines on Fixer Upper does it all the time! I thought it was just something she did, but no! I just watched an episode of Nate and Jeremiah By Design where they renovated a room in a homeless shelter and they actually built two huge bookcases and filled them with books for residents to borrow - all turned backwards!!! It makes no sense at all! It creates a job for the space owner as they have to turn them all around! #nobooksmarts

Char, you are so right.  I thought this was an isolated thing that would go nowhere.  People who turn the books backward definitely don't like to read and have no curiosity.  Turning books backward in a homeless shelter or building bookcases just to do this is crazy!  There should be a law against this!!

I not only hate the look, being an avid reader and lover of books it makes me angry that a decorator thinks that their neutral background is more important than BOOKS???? Horrible idea!!!

Deborah, I am glad you agree with me on this look.  The blog was written in 2008 when books were still appreciated.  I loved them then and love them now but I have seen the trend now of folks not caring for books.  So many are being donated to charitable organizations!  And not being bought!  I'm still hugging my books.

Maybe it's a copyright thing if they show a title on TV. Is it a legal thing? I think it looks silly. Show the books!!!

Bobbie, it has nothing to do with copyright.  This was just for looks.  I agree with you!  Show the books!!
