There should be a "place" for everything that is inside your home. Everything should have a "home" to go home to. Clutter, piles, dumping grounds are just unacceptable and a chaotic way to live. If you haven't established a home for it, no one knows how or where to put it back. Organizing is easy to get started; it just takes baby steps.
1. Pick up the item- I know this part sounds easy, but in reality it's not. When things have been piled up for so long it becomes an acceptable sight.
2. Sorting - Figure out where it should belong, (kitchen, closet, filing cabinet, trash etc.) and then just place it in that room. Repeat with each item in the pile.
3. Designate a home - Now that you have created a new pile in each room, it is time to designate a permanent home for the item.
4. Grouping - Gather like things together. Decide how they will be organized. For example magazines, you can group them as "all magazines" or "Mom's magazines" and "Kid's magazines" and keep them together like that.
5. Put it away - Organize things in a manner, which will be user friendly. If you store them on a shelf, basket, drawer, etc. ensure that everyone knows that is the item's new home. Make sure that whomever the item belongs to has access to it.
6. Maintain the space - Now that everything has a "home" it needs to be maintained. Don't let it get piled up again. Keep an eye on your hard work.
Getting organized takes time and effort, but it doesn't have to be hard. It just needs to be a constant practice. Communication with others who share your space is important too. Everyone needs to be "on board" with organizing or you will drive yourself nuts. Just remember "baby steps" and you are on your way to an organized "you".
