Choking on a Pickle: Proposal A

Michigan is in a big pickle.

What will Michigan citizens say next month when they see that the government says their home is worth more than it was a year ago? They see for sales signs all around them. They see falling prices. If they are a home seller, there is no way they haven't felt the bite.

Yes, it is reassessment time and it looks like the assessors are about to tell us that property values are on the way up!

Who is lying? The tax assessor? The Realtor who hasn't brought an offer after 6 months on the market?

We feel your pain.

Oh my - the government claiming home prices in MI are increasing? Perhaps they should invest some of our tax dollars in Detroit real estate and hope to make a profit!

Tony, there are profits to be made in Metro Detroit real estate. That is not the issue. Our taxation system looks back to 2004 to set taxable values. That was a very strong year for home values and home sales.

We have the same problem in Honolulu. Assessments went up by a large amount. Everyone I have seen so far is above market value, some by a lot.

Lots of people in Florida are waiting to see if their assessments will go down in 2007, since prices did.

Maureen, the Gubmint said my home in South Lyon lost 6% of its value from last year. That's based on the recent assessment notice from Oakland County. Read the thing last night and immediately started thinking about the impact this will have on everything our taxes go towards: public education, city services, etc. Methinks this will be an interesting time indeed.
