This past week, a few people had asked me for updates on my good friend David and on my mother-in-law Jackie, based on the previous posts I have written about each of them.

Before proceeding, and if you have time, I would recommend reading these past posts in order to better understand what I am talking about here (they are in chronological order, and none of them are terribly long):

A Day of Clarity for my Family

My Friend David

Update on my mother-in-law Jackie and my friend David

Another update on Jackie and David

Update on David and Jackie - The Power of Prayer

Jackie remains in our home, and she is making great strides lately (no pun intended).  She has begun to walk a bit more, and each day seems to bring incremental improvement.  The other day she walked about 50 steps at once with the use of her walker and with very minimal assistance.  She told me that she didn't experience ANY pain during her walk, which is a huge improvement.

She often uses her wheelchair or a rolling office chair to come into the kitchen now and get food or just to hang around with us.  A few days ago she cooked a big meal complete with salad and side dishes for us.  The kids enjoy having her around, because she is always willing to talk and teach them something.  Her mental state is terrific and she hasn't had any further problems in that arena.  Overall, I am hoping that she will continue to exercise with the goal of walking more over time.

I stopped by to see David this evening for the first time in awhile, and he was pretty tired when I saw him.  He looked pretty rough in my opinion, but it had been a long day for him, according to Jan.  His neck was swollen pretty badly from a recent surgery to remove some wires that they had to use previously to hold a flap in place in his throat.  He was having a difficult time hearing me even when I felt like I was almost yelling, because he has fluid in his ears, according to his recent doctor visit.  Jan told me that he has lost over 100 pounds since this ordeal began about a year ago.

While I was there, he communicated with me in several ways, by writing, some lip reading, and even a bit of sign language.  I spent about 30-45 minutes with him, then I talked to Jan for about an hour before I left.

They are trying to keep their heads above water financially, since David did not have health insurance and he is clearly unable to work for now.  I can't even imagine how much the medical bills will be for his treatment.  If you are reading this, and you have any ideas that you would like for me to share with them about what David can do (perhaps from home) to earn money and have some livelihood, they are all ears.  I sincerely wish that I had more money so that I could share it with them.  They do have some family resources (mainly siblings) who have been helping out.

On the positive side of things, he walked around the house a good deal today, and he is trying to slowly regain the strength in his legs.  He is able to eat a little bit of food now (rather than being fed exclusively through a tube in his stomach) and he has a small amount of taste from the taste buds in his throat.  He is cancer-free (or at least for the moment), and he has the love of a wonderful wife, extended family and many good friends to carry him through this, along with his exceptionally strong faith.

If you feel led to pray for either or both of these special people in my life, they can surely use it.  I hope that Jackie continues on this upward trend, and I hope that David is able to get more motivated and up on his feet more often as that will speed his healing process.  To be honest, tonight was really tough for me, since I David is one of my longtime heroes and I can't stand to see him in this condition.  I thank you for taking the time to read this.

Crouch - I've followed this story about your friend and family since its inception, reading the strife & trials they have gone through.  Honestly, this is inspiration at its finest and something I/we can learn from.  Life is precious and every moment...no matter how seemingly mundane...matters.  It's good to hear that David is making progress and Jackie is doing much of the same.  My thoughts are with them both amigo, thank you for sharing this.

Evening, Jason - We will certainly be praying for Jackie and David and his family... I can't imagine the difficult financial road ahead of them.  It may seem like a insurmountable hurdle but the Father can work miracles.

On another note; It was great to talk to you tonight... always good to chat with a member of the AR comedy underworld.

SARDI - I appreciate your kind remarks.  It has been an interesting road for each of them.  As you said, life is precious and it is not to be taken lightly.

JESSE - Thanks for your prayers.  I feel the same way about the challenges and about God's ability to work miracles.  I also really enjoyed our talk.  Sorry about the fact that this was so fresh on my mind.  I am generally a bit more fun to talk to.

Jason.. I was just thinking about David and your mother-in-law yesterday.  As we have talked before, I just can't imagine what it's like and even for Jan.

In regards to some ideas?  Can you get any local groups together?  Possibly some sort of charity?  And maybe setting up some sort of fund on here, in a blog... using pay pal per se?

JEFF - I actually considered doing that, but I didn't want it to come across as selfish, since I know that there are a lot of people with problems out there.  I would love to be able to raise money for them somehow.

Jason, just the fact that you show up probably means the world to them. So many people drift away when they are needed the most. Some just don't know what to say or "how to act" so they don't so anything. I know I've been guilty of that in the past. I understand it is hard for you to see him in this new situation. You know, it may be harder for him to be seen by you than it is for you to see him.

I'm glad things are looking up for your mother in law. You are a good family man and I am so proud to call you my friend.

ELAINE - I would love to see him more often, and I hope to go by again within the week.  I don't know if you remember this from my last meme or not, but I actually wanted to be a doctor when I was growing up.  I don't typically mind medical stuff, but this was emotionally difficult, since he seemed so sick and defeated.  I agree with you that it would be very hard for him to be seen that way.  Thanks so much for your kind and very supportive words.  They mean the world to me.

Great, great news about Jackie.  I had forgotten that David had no health insurance.  What a catastrophe.  I'll give it some thought, and see if I can't produce a fundraising idea.  I know it is a very difficult time to ask fellow Realtors for assistance, given the states of many markets, but I bet the group of us can at minimum cobble together some ideas.  Best wishes to both moving forward, Jason.  Sorry I couldn't get back with you today, but I'm sure we'll talk tomorrow.

PAUL - Thanks, buddy.  Yes, Jackie has improved a ton over the past couple of months.  I agree - it is a tough time to ask for money these days.  She was thinking of posting something on her CarePages blog, but she felt embarrassed to do so it seemed.  She said even if everybody there could give a dollar it would help them (that would be about $200).  I wanted to cry, and later I did.

ELAINE - I did check it out per your recommendation.  It looks like it has some great potential, although it is small for now.  It probably needs some additional exposure.

Jason:  I am so glad to hear about Jackie's progress.  I bet her being able to prepare an entire meal really boosted her mood.  One of the frustrations of being old, and being ill... is the feeling that you are totally useless.  With Jackie being able to cook like that... I am so glad for her, and for all of you.

Poor David.  I feel so badly for him and his family.  What a struggle to have to go through.  It was hard just reading about it.  I wish there was something I could do.  I will keep both Jackie and David in my prayers.  Remember to take care of the care giver.

Jason:  I was wondering how Jackie and David were doing.  Glad to hear that Jackie is coming along.  I feel so bad for David and Jan!  It is terrible to have no insurance.  I don't know how they are handling it!  We don't know how lucky we are until we hear a story like this.  If you set up something on here, I would be glad to give something.  I will say prayers for both David and Jackie.

JASON - It's great to see that Jackie is progressing.  There were some touch and go times, so I'm sure that you and the family are pleased with the progress.  Sorry to hear about David's struggle.  I can't even imagine going through what he is going through.  He has a lot of strength to be able to carry on.

Jason, sounds like Jackie is slowly improving and both are surrounded by family and loved ones. That in and of itself is a blessing. I will continue to pray for David and Jackie. Thanks for updating us. I know it is hard, I can hear the sadness in your post.

Hey, Jason.  I just read all the related posts.  I truly can't imagine how I could have been as strong and lovingly full of faith as you have been this whole time.  Jackie's story is amazing.  It's wonderful that you and your wife were so caring and patient and nursed her to give her a fighting chance.  Big hugs to her!  I'm glad David has had a successful surgery and has such a strong wife.  You're so lucky to have a friend you truly love and can share that with.  I'll keep all of you in my prayers...

If some one does come up with a creative way to raise funds for David, please let me know.  I'll help, donate, whatever...

KAREN ANNE - It's so good to see you here, and I know that you have tracked this story from the beginning.  Yes, Jackie's spirits seem to be great these days.  I may have to set up a PayPal account for them and see if I can raise some funds to help them out, as they are drowning in debt now.

Dear Jason - Your Mother - in Law continues to be in my prayers and I will add David as he seems to have had slow progress. A thought came to mind to check with the social ministry committees of local churches - sometimes money in small amounts is ear-marked from donors to help those in need with medical expenses. This can be gifted to his family tax free if under a certain dollar amt. Thanks for the update.

Sincerely,

Grace

Jason- Great to hear you MIL is doing better. I am sorry to hear your friends plight with the medical bills. I have no ins either, just some catastrophic. A few years ago when I facing another back surgery that was not done in the US yet, I was going to have to go to Germany to get it and ins would not cover it. I started brain storming ways to raise it. I told Melissa some of them when we discussed this yesterday and would be happy to pass them on. As always, my prayers are with them!

Thanks for sharing.  I am glad they are both progressing.  So glad your mother-in-law has her mental state, I think that's a big hurdle for recovery.  And you are such a gem for having her in your home...straight to heaven for that one!

Jason it's great to hear that Jackie is making progress!  An entire meal, that must have meant the world to her to be able to accomplish that!  I am sad to hear about Davids struggles and that he has no medical insurance.  Have Jan look into seeing if the hospital has an uncompensated care program.  We have a couple hospitals here that have these programs for people without insurance.  I'll continue to pray for both and for strength for you so you can continue to support them.
