Roger and I recently had dinner with friends at the steakhouse in Winchester, Texas.
Winchester is in Fayette County, a quaint little Texas town located just about 10 minutes from Smithville, and 20 from Bastrop or LaGrange.
Settled in the early 1800's by Cunninham's and Ingram's ( just to name a few ) out in the fertile mesquite prairies, and at one point the town had seven general stores, a school, lumber yard, saloon, blacksmith, and barbershop.
A few of the old buildings remain and the Murphy's Steakhouse is in one of them. This is casual dining at it's finest! Come in your jeans and work boots if you have been out on the ranch all day!
Their menu includes a nice choice of Starters, Burgers & Sandwiches, Salads & Spuds, Dinners, and Seafood Hand Breaded, Pastas, Mexican Food, Child's and Senior Menu items, and of course Steaks.
We had their Rib-Eyes, I opted for the 6 oz. and Roger had the 10 0z. We ordered them medium and we got just that, a hot pink center, how delightful! Beware the 6 oz. steak is not what you would find in a normal city restaurant, it is huge! Don't tell them but I think their scales are broken!
They have lots of nice sides to go along but we went for the good old favorite a Baked. They have a nice salad bar too! While we waited we enjoyed a couple of cold Shiner Bochs.
Pricing is super reasonable. The clientele are friendly locals. The dessert choices looked awesome and all all homemade, and the Chocolate Meringue pie came highly recommended but we were to full to partake!
It made for a great evening.
If you are in the area or making a run down 71 to Houston stop in!
