Seth Godin says stop selling real estate

Seth Godin is a great thinker and one of my virtual mentors through his books and blogs.  He had a great post about a recent presentation he gave to a group of real estate agents.  He told the crowd to stop selling real estate.  You should read the blog to get the full story but I think everyone on Active Rain probably falls into what he referred to as Plan B.  As agents and brokers you are already selling real estate differently then the majority of real estate professionals and understand the value of educating people.

Here are a few of the Seth's points:

  • Become the Best in the World at what you do
  • Micro specialize since you can't be the best in the world at everything
  • Build permission with your clients
  • Communicate with your clients post sale and keep them informed (think repeat business down the road and word of mouth) but make sure you provide information your clients want.
  • Stop doing business as usual the times have changed.

Enjoy Seth's post and good luck becoming the best in the world.  If you are blogging in AR my guess is you probably are already on your way.

Josef:

I would love to read more about Seth Godin, unfortunately the sites that you highlighted are all in gibberish.

Josef:  Great post.  I came to the real estate world from a retail background from years ago.  After a stink as a legal secretary, I decided a change was in order.  I'm not good at selling, wouldn't even know how to pitch someone.  I just stay in touch, provide information and answer their questions or at least tell them where to find an answers.  Most of my customers are highly educated and if you try to give them a sales pitch they would disappear.  I logged on to the site you referenced, skimmed the post and will really get to it later today.  Thanks!  Looks like some very good tips.

Great post!!  I have book marked Seth Godin's blog and will go back and read it.  I like what he has to say and think it has great value to us as an industry.  In order to be successful now we have to offer something different and something of value.

If we don't change I can remember something about Dinosaurs. We all need a new way of looking at things in the future and Seth does bring up great points.

Lorraine, Sorry about the links.  I noticed the problem after posting they should be working fine now.

Annette, You have the best client base you can ask for.  They sell themselves you just show them the way.  Education is the best sales tool around.

June, If you liked this post just wait Seth always has something of interest to say.  His blog is addictive and his books are great.

Terry, your exactly right. History repeats itself if you don't learn and change.

Josef,

I was fortunate to be in that "large group of real estate agents" to whom Seth spoke.  Sat right up front, too.

He is a dynamic speaker.

One of my favorite aspects of gaining "permission" is that we don't have the unbridled right to "interrupt" lives anymore to push our services.

Mike, you are fortunate.  I have heard him speak in public a few times.  Very few speakers are as engaging and entertaining to listen to.  I try to hear him speak whenever I can.  You can call me a groupie.  I even have a Seth Godin action figure.

Josef,

Forgot to add:

This was after Seth walked down 67 floors in his hotel prior to speaking, because a power failure took out the elevators...

If it took his edge off, I would like to see him speak when he hadn't had such a trial...

I like the part where he told real estate agents to stop selling real estate. Its true you are either in it for the long haul or you are not.

Mike, I read about the walk down on his blog.  Trust me Seth is always on. I would guess he used that walk down to energize and draw on for his presentation.

Jill, remember no one likes to be sold to.

Thanks for reading and commenting.

I agree...any agent who thinkgs their job is "selling real estate" is wrong...it is so much more than that...
