There is NO General Sales Tax in Montana! It's hard for visitors to get used to but when you purchase something for $2.99 in Montana - you only pay $2.99 at the register, not $3.10 or $3.21.

Montana does not charge tax on business purchases and there is no state or local excise tax on long distance telephone costs. Montana primarily uses property & income taxes to support public services.

The lack of sales tax means that many people come to Montana to make large purchases - on cars, motorhomes, and even appliances & home electronics. One Montana retailer does a huge amount of business selling appliances & home electronics online because there is no sales tax, even when they ship to out-of-state customers.

Montana does have an accomodations or "bed tax" of 7% however. This applies to all stays under 30 days in a hotel, vacation rental, or cabin.

Individual State Taxes  And, out of the 50 states, Montana ranks NUMBER SEVEN in income remaining after state and local taxes. Montanans have approx. 90.4% of their income left after paying state and local taxes - which is 8.5% more than the national average!

Personal income tax in Montana is assessed at a rate of 2-8% of taxable income.

General Business Taxes Montana levies a flat corporate tax of 6.75% of net income or $50 - whichever is greater. This compares with corporate tax rates of 9.3% IN California and 8% in Idaho.

Mike - that's great, we have a lot of posts about fishing in Montana on our blog - http://activerain.com/blogs/mkkray. We manage a nice cabin on the Clark Fork River that attracts a lot of fly fishermen - http://activerain.com/blogsview/337332/Think-Spring-Book-Your.

Thats one of the biggest reasons that I keep coming back here when I get a wild hair and decide to leave....that and I was born in Helena and raised in Plains.  Once this place gets in your blood, its really hard to leave.

Hi Kevin and Monica,

I have known several people (before I was in real estate) that missed Montana so much that they moved back.

Hi Clint & Leslie, I agree, I actually moved away for 10 years but ended up back in Montana. It is truly a unique and special place to live.

Wow!  One other thing I heard is that there is no speed limit in many parts of Montana.  Is that true?  I have always been curious.

Hi Jonathan - when I was in high school, Montana did not have speed limits for awhile. You could drive whatever speed was "reasonable and prudent." Of course, everyone's definition of that is different so it was hard to enforce. The state also risked losing some federal funding if they kept that law in place. So today we can drive 70 on the Interstate and 55 on smaller highways.

K&M -- I remember that 'reasonalbe and prudent' thing....that was awesome!  That and the $5 speeding tickets on the interstate.  I used to keep a roll of $5's in the visor...

Hi Clint - I remember those days as well - no one ever believes me about the $5 ticket.

Since you are bragging about low taxes... how are you realstate taxes?  Here in Washington state there are ridiculous laws made to evaluate person's realstate every 4 years and based on that is your realstate tax.  So if the prices go up you taxes go up too.  For example on a house valued at $ 224,900 you pay $ 2,300 aproxim.  So can you tell me for example what would that be in Montana?

Low taxes my ass! What about property tax...you know the taxes on what you sell..property! Montana is full of people like yourselves who want to exploit and get their share of the goods. What about the Redneck Asshole Tax? You forgot that one! I was born and raised there and don't miss Montana a bit..I'm in the UK having a cold pint and NOT having to deal with a bunch of want to be's. My family does not want anymore jack asses in the neighborhood and we live all over the state trying to get away from numnuts...as well. Fishing...cum on..the only River That Runs Through...is the one out of your ass after sll the beers at one of the shit holes you call a barr. Move there and just walk in..we'll be glad to put our boots in your river!
