The Woodbridge Airport opened for business in 1959.  At the time it was in the "middle of nowhere" on the north side of Old Bridge Road just east of Smoketown Road.

It was considered a difficult airport since there were trees at either end of the 2,246' runway with a substantial dip in the middle.  Many pilot instructors would not let their students attempt a landing.

Over time suburbia encroached with the development of Lake Ridge, Westridge and Old Bridge Estates.  There were many times when I would be showing homes in the area and as I was passing the airport a small plane on takeoff would seem like it barely cleared the roof of my car.  Since the runway was perpendicular to Old Bridge Road, I could see them accelerating in my direction.

At the time of its' closing in 1987 there were approximately 113 small aircraft using the airport.  Most of them relocated to Manassas or Stafford facilities.

Today, similar to Beacon Mall in Fairfax County, the airport site is home to The Festival at Old Bridge.

The road in the foreground of the shopping center photo at the right is Old Bridge Road and the street at the lower left is Smoketown Road.

Karen, it does look like a runway.  I found this interesting after reading your other post mentioning that the airport had become a mall.  It is all about recycling isn't it?  The land has a new use now and it sounds like it is being put to good use.

Karen

There was this little airport out in Waukesha County, WI that probably had 20 planes in the 60's. Now it has major jets. Things just got up and took off on day.

Sincerely

Karen--I will bet some of the residents in the area are glad there is no longer little planes flying overhead. It would make me crazy...But we have a few smaller airports in our area and there are few complaints from homebuyers about the neighbors as long as it was disclosed prior to purchase.

Marchel,  Sometime people drive through the place as if it was a runway.  Rapid growth makes it necessary for land to achieve its' "highest and best use",  Karen

Tom,  That is unusual since the small weighborhood airports usually get swallowed up by residential development,  Karen

Teri,  Believe it or not there was never a disastorous crash.  New homes were built and sold at the end of the runway while it was still in operation,  Karen
