"Face" your fears! Part 2

Home Stager with Home Staging Online Services

We have already determined that you are missing opportunities by not having your photo on your marketing materials.  Everyone HAS one...USE IT!!!  Now, let's talk about the photos themselves.  The type of photo should be determined by two things.  First, what kind of personality do you have, and second, how do you want to portray yourself to the world?

Do you want to look friendly?  This will probably help you get a wider variety of clients! Do you want to come across as very stylish and polished?  You will probably attract the higher end clients.  This is a personal choice. If you don't already have your photo displayed, you should visit other profiles, choose the photos you like, and then figure out what it is you like about them.

Here are four of my favorites!  I did not ask permission from these people, but I hope they see their appearance in this post as a compliment, because that's how it was intended!

Home Stager: Dane Caldwell - Downtown Toronto Decorator Home Stager (2 Hounds Design + Home Staging)

Look at Dane's photo.  Would you expect her to pull up in front of a home driving a rusty pickup truck with a "Honk if you love Hooters" bumper sticker?  Of course, not.  But, how do you know that?  Because her photo shouts urban chic!  It says Dane is NOT going to stage your home with plastic cat figurines!  Her style will be sleek and elegant.

Picture of Home Stager: Michelle Minch Home Staging Pasadena & Los Angeles, CA (Moving Mountains Design & Home Staging, Pasadena, CA)

Look at Michelle's photo.  Do you think when she invites friends over for dinner, she serves them franks and beans on paper plates?  No, because look at the setting of her photo!  This is a woman who loves to be surrounded by beautiful things, and will make the homes she stages beautiful, too.

Picture of Home Stager: Audrey Hoffman, SimplyStage (SimplyStage)

Look at Audrey's photo.  Can you picture her sitting at home on the weekends crocheting Kleenex box covers for her friends?  Of course not!  You can read Audrey's personality in the pose and the sassy gleam in her eye!  This young woman is going to put some pizazz in her staging!

Picture of Home Stager: Jackson West (Reveal Estate Home Staging - Vancouver)

Look at Jackson's.  Would you guess that Jackson collects Smokey and the Bandit memorabilia, and he displays it on a shelf made of planks of wood between two cinder blocks?  No way!  His photo shouts of color and style!  I'm surprised anyone moves after Jackson has staged their home!

Home Stager: Julia Maher - Home Staging for Fairfield County CT (Nestings)

Look at Julia's. Does she look like someone who is going to pocket the silver when she is in a home staging it?  Of course, not!  Her photo says she is a bright, and honest stager who is going to give you every penny's worth of staging paid for, and then some!

I think you get the idea.  I used stagers for my examples, but the guidelines are the same for real estate agents or lenders, or anyone that deals with the public in a position of trust. Use your photo as a tool to express your sense of style and personality.  And please, keep your photos updated.  Men, we don't want to see you in your three piece suit with the reversible vest, and ladies, the glamour shot thing was very '80's! Two to three years is a good lifespan for your photo.  Because,  whether you like to admit it or not, we do change in that amount of time!

As much as we don't like to admit it, books are judged by their covers.  Make sure your covers says what you want it to say! (and for most people, that glamour shot just isn't the message we want!)

Elaine - I really like this blog.  I hadn't thought about this the way you expressed it.  I think it is very true.  hmmm..... I keep thinking of changing my photo, but I don't think I know what would fit me best.  The Minnie Mouse ears photo is probably the most 'ME' but I'm pretty sure it's not very professional... lol! (Mine is less than 3 years old though & I'm always told I look younger in person - so I guess I have time to age into mine... lol)

Ginger- Your photo does speak volumes, so it's worth the time to really consider it!

Melissa- Gee, I've never had anyone say that to me! My honey asked for a picture of me when we first started dating, so I got all glammed up in a black sparkly evening gown, and put my camera on the tripod. It just wasn't me, until I slipped off the strappy shoes and put on bunny slippers. It's still his favorite photo of me!

Great post. I am always amazed when I see a photo that doesn't help sell a stager's business.  Our business is visual - get a photo, get a great photo and sell yourself. :)

Gee I really love the glamour shots that show cleavage and/or too casual so that people don't take you seriously.  Someone needs to tell those people out of kindness.

Kym- While doing a little research for this post, I checked out your website. Yours is a perfect example of the kind of website, where I feel like I know you better, and I would trust you with staging my home. How nice to include some photos of your family, to really give it that persoanl touch!

Terrylynn- So true. You have to wonder if the clients they are looking for, have anything to do with real estate! ;)

Great pics, Elaine.  Great point too, it's very true.  People do want to see you and get a feeling about who you are before hiring you.  It makes a big difference.

I completely agree!  I met another stager a while back and was SHOCKED to meet her in person... she looked absolutely NOTHING like her photo (it was taken 5 years before I met her and her hair and makeup style had totally changed.)  A picture says a thousand words (we, as stagers, know that!) and having prospects comfortable with the way we look (vain as it may sound) means that they will be comfortable with learning more about us.  Great post!!

Elaine, consider your own photo as well.  It tells me that you are very professional yet approachable.  Great insights, and I'm guessing there has been no objections!

Elaine -- so close to home for me in timing!  I just staged a vacant yesterday ( and had a blast with the agent) Literally, she said she choose me because my photo on AR showed creativity, a sense a humor, and she perceived me as someone that could work  with anyone without getting uptight.

Hard to believe you just did a post on this -- makes me want to have 3 or 4 profile pix.  I may work on that!  LOL

Lachelle- I also think that the photo we choose reflects on our style and taste, and if we have beautiful before and afters, we should have an equally attractive picture of ourselves (and that doesn't mean WE have to be attractive!)

Sharon- I chose the examples I did, because even though I know the personalities of the stagers pictured, I still think that someone seeing them for the first time, would come to the same conclusions!

Kristina- I had my photographer take formal business pictures, and some not so formal. I found that I prefer the more casual ones. Another thing to remember--it's hard to relax and be natural with a camera right in your face. My photo that I'm using right now is a close-up from a photo taken twelve feet away from me! It was much easier for me to relax!

Karen- If you have a fabulous personality, why keep it hidden? That's great, Karen!!!

Gita-I want people to know I'm "seasoned" before they meet me! And, doesn't it throw you off when you have made a mental picture of a client, and then they turn out to be nothing like you expected?

Excellent way to let your personality show through. I often prefer a candid shot of someone (not too casual, still professional) but one that shows you who they are.

Jackie- I totally agree with no glamour shots--you know...the ones in which the women are wearing more makeup than they have ever worn in their lives and the focus is a little fuzzy to disguise what their "real" faces look like. And, as far as where your picture is on your card, I don't think it really matters as long as it's there somewhere! Same goes for the website.  It doesn't have to be on the home page, as long as it is somewhere will people can see it!
