"Pick your Player" Debate

It is Saturday morning and I am in a mood to strike up a debate here on ActiveRain. Baseball is in the air and I want to know one thing. So, I reaching out to the "experts" out there and asking your opinion this morning. The debate will take place in the comment zone below and all that want can chime in.

This is for people inside ActiveRain and outside. Who knows, maybe someone will join because of it.

*Disclaimer* Just remember, no need for name calling. These are people's opinions that I am soliciting. If you do not agree with them, that is ok, just keep it civil.

Now, with the formalities out of the way, let's get started.

What one single player is going to make the difference on your team this year and why.

I will start.

Atlanta Braves - Most people thing that Mark Teixeira would be the player that will make or break the braves this year. I have to disagree. I think that the Braves will go as Yunel Escobar goes. Atlanta took a chance in letting go of Edgar Renteria to hand over the everyday job to Yunel Escobar.

Now, it really did not take me long to get on the Yunel bandwagon as he is a good looking kid. He stepped in a leadoff, batted second, or batted 8th and it never phased him last year. He could go right, left, or center with hitting. His defense is what won me over though. For those that remember Rafael Furcal then you can liken the 2.

Heather, you would be surprised on the amount of people that think that they do not know anything on baseball but really do.

Danny - It is a no-brainer for me.  On the New York Mets, it is Santana.  Possibly the best left-hander when he was in the American league facing a line-up of 9 hitters, he should adjust quite well to the seven-and-a-half hitters in most National League lineups.  He is going to strike out a lot of batters and gobble up innings.  Most importantly, though, we finally have that stopper who can end a 4-game losing streak all by himself - which would have been helpful last September!

I can't pick just one player, how about 2? With the return of a healthy Mike Hampton, that is the word out of the Braves camp, who is apparently showing he still has it and the return of perennial favorite Tom Glavine, the Braves have shored up what was an anemic pitching rotation last season. The rotation is top notch and that is what the Braves have been needing to have a pennant shot this season. IMO, all the other pieces are there. Yes, I'm whispering, "please do what is necessary to hang on to Teixeira."

Danny, we still have the Fantasy Football Toilet Bowl Award sitting in my husbands office, I think I'm staying away from baseball picks  :)

Steven, I can see where Santana is going to be huge fr the Mets, but I do not see how he can be the one player that can change them. My pick for the Mets would be Jose Reyes as he is the guy that will set the table for them day in and day out. Thanks for stopping by.

Rich, those are all good choices. The pitching rotation for Atlanta this year should be nice. If they can win 65% of their games as starters, they will be untouchable.

Debbie, you do not make it too fun for it to be a debate. And I am sure that your 2 cents worth is pretty good.

As a Mets fan I have no doubt...Johan Santana. Danny....your comment about Reyes is true...but to explain why Santana is so strong...think of this...take what Tom Glavine did for the Mets last year, add 10% more innings (so you do not need your pen as much), add 100 more strike outs (less errors) subtract almost 2 runs per game (much lower ERA) and just think...Glavine won 13 games...how many can Santana win...20?

Less pen issues, less fielding issues, less runs per game...and a great hitting pitcher in the lineup! Reyes will be Reyes and a .300 avg with 70 stolen bases and 15-20 home runs will be great...but Santana makes the rest of the pitching staff better....now Oliver Perez is your number 4 starter because of this transaction!

Team DiMuria, you make a great argument, but what happens to the team if Reyes is lost for the season?

This year we've got a new crop of young guys looking to make an impression mixed with the older left side of the infield.  But I've always found that the man behind the plate should be the leader of a strong team and this year we've got Kurt Suzuki coming back for his first full year as backstop after Kendall's departure last summer.  Everyone lends something to a team but I think the Suzuki is the one who does his homework, knows how to work a team, and has the best view on how to improve the defense.  He's also a solid bat in the bottom of the line-up.

Adam, I would have thought that the player that would make or break this team would be Eric Chavez or Bobby Crosby. I guess time will tell.

DT- Gotta be Jose Contreras for my White Sox. I'm assuming that Buehrle and Vazquez are going to be fine 1-2....I think Danks and Floyd will be a very average back end...Contreras was the best pitcher in baseball for about a calender year (end '05- early '06).....and then turned into a batting practice pitcher. This pick is also assuming Konerko, Dye, Thome and Co. don't bite like they did a year ago.

I like them as players, but they're both injury prone.  Both played less than 100 games last year.  Crosby especially can't seem to stay of the DL.  Plus, by A's standards, they are the older guys in the infield.  If Chavez stays healthy and has a good year, I expect him to put up good numbers, but then Billy will probably trade him.

Jim, I am actually going to agree with you. I do not see an everyday player out there on their squad that if he were to go down, you could kiss them goodbye.

Danny i'm glad the mets got santana and Reyes is huge to, but I think the is the MVP year for David Wright, he almost could have been there last year if not for that horrendous April. If he gets hot out of the gate I think he can carry this team.

02/23/2008 05:34 PM by Hugh Krone Sussex County NJ Century 21 Realtor (Century21BillSemmens)

Hugh, that is a great pick. I forgot all about him.

02/23/2008 07:04 PM by Danny Thornton (Home America Mortgage, INC.)

Danny, as a Mets fan Santana would be the easy choice. While I believe he will contribute significantly, it won't matter if Pedro is no longer Pedro, if John Maine and Oliver Perez take a slide instead of progressing, and if Mike Pelfrey continues to struggle. Reyes could be an obvious pick, for most of the season last year he was the spark that started many a rally. Carlos Beltran and David Wright would also be hard to argue with. My pick however is Carlos Delgado. If he can get back to the production level that baseball fans are accustomed to, watch out. The Mets got by all season last year without that big bat with the clutch RBI in the middle of their lineup last year. If Delgado had been Delgado last year, the Mets win the division hands down - then who knows how far they could have gone. So for me, Mr. Delgado is the key for the Mets this year. Just my humble opinion - for what it's worth.

02/23/2008 08:23 PM by Jim Albano (Prudential Damiano Realty)

Jim, that is a good opinion. Delgado can carry a team.
