Winter Has Arrived in the Big Bear Valley

Originally posted on The Sugarloaf Real Estate Blog

Other than some of the coldest temperatures I have ever experienced, the last winter that we have had in the Big Bear Valley didn't generate very much snow.  In fact, I can't remember if we had a real snow storm last winter.  I'd say it was a rather cold but mild winter.  This year is making certainly making up for it.  To date, we have had 58 inches of snow and we are expecting another snow storm tonight!

The snow and cold temperatures are great for the Big Bear Valley.  Snow Summit and Bear Mountain Ski Resorts are having a great season due to the cold temperatures and the amount of snow that has fallen.  This weather brings a lot of people to the Big Bear Valley and it isn't long before they start thinking about buying a vacation get-a-way.  Why not?  The prices of homes have dropped, the interest rates are still historically low, and they can always use it as a rental when they aren't using it.

That's where I come in, I'm a Realtor in the Big Bear Valley and know the best deals on mountain get-a-ways here in Big Bear.  Even with all of this snow, I still love taking my clients out and showing them some of these great low priced properties. The snow makes it a little more difficult, especially when you have to  walk through 4 feet of snow that has accumulated next to the cabin to get to the lock box.  The traffic is always a bit crazier after a good snow storm and that can slow things down as I try to get my clients to different cabins.

But all in all, I wouldn't change where I live, or what I do for anything.  I love selling real estate, and I love living in the Big Bear Valley!

It is 85 her and sunny today.  I am from Michigan and do sometimes miss the snowy days.

Tony, We were going to visit Big Bear this weekend so that my son could snowboard on his birthday but I was afraid to drive in the snow!  I had to cancel my reservations and we are going to reschedule for another weekend or spring break.

My husband and I were in Big Bear when the first HUGE rain and snow storm hit just after the New Year.  It rained so much that our cabin flooded - but we LOVE Big Bear....  Can't wait to go back and hit Snow Summit!

If you are missing snow - head to Milwaukee Wisconsin.  We haven't gone over 6 days - all winter -  without a snow event. Every couple days, snow, sleet, snow, more snow, cold, cold, cold, cold.  Skiing?  THE BEST in many many years. Snow shoeing - GREAT.  Snowmobiling - gotta love it.  BUT you can have the below zero stuff, we are all sick of that.  A few more weeks to spring.... maybe we can get house sales really going when we can all drive around safely again. LOL

WOW!  I used to ski at Snow Summit when I was a kid!  I lived in LA and we would head up there on weekends.  I moved to Honolulu right after I graduated from Venice High and have been here from '79.  I REALLY MISS THE SNOW!

Cheers-

Mike

Tony,

Looks like the soft real estate market has invaded Big Bear Lake, too, which is great for buyers. Besides that mortgage interest rates remain nice and low, so the opportunities are there.

Hi Jackie,

Thanks for the weather report from Michigan.  We're between storms right now, so the roads are clearing and everyone is out and about.  but that will all change tonight when the next storm arrives.

I have a second home condo in Palm Springs.  I will be coming out for 2 weeks on February 28 to get out out of chilly Cape Cod.  I have been watching the weather report in southern California and I noticed it has been cooler and wetter than in years past.

HI Roberta,

What a shame you had to concel your reservations, but I understand about not wanting to drive in the snow.  My 30 yr old daughter lives next door to me and I've taken her to work and picked her up many times because she too is not comfortable driving in the snow.  I'm sure that when you do come up to Big Bear, you'll have a wonderful time.  Fell free to drop in to Coldwell Banker when you're here and say hi!

Thanks for your comments on my Blog Connie.  Yes, that was a big storm.  Sorry that the cabin flooded.  But with all of the little things that we have to deal with from time to time, it's still the best place to live and sell real estate!

HI April,

After reading your comments, I don't know what we have to complain about.  It sounds like you have had a heck of a lot more snow than we have.  Like there, the skiing, snowshoeing, snow boarding are also very good up here in Big Bear.  The weather doesn't stop the people from down the hill.  They chain up, well most of them do and drive on up here, park where they shouldn't, block the roads and play in the snow.  But it's all ok because my next client is out there in one of those cars!

Esko,

Yes, the prices have come down.  We're looking at 2005 prices and we are still selling. Granted, it isn't like it used to be but it is still good!
