So, RainerNation, what's a girl like me supposed to think when on a regular old Friday afternoon, amid all the normal mortgage madness, the phone rings and the caller identifies herself as one of the producers of ABC's "Good Morning America"?

Check the caller ID. Yep, area code 212 (New York). Oh my gosh, you mean this isn't one of the jokester mortgage brokers in my office who relentless tease me about being "The Blogger"?

"We want to interview Jake". For just a moment, my mind spins as I think, "Who the **** is Jake?"

Then I remember. "Jake" was the pseudonym I gave my client in a featured post last week on ActiveRain. I had hoped to give a sympathetic spin to those homeowners in California who are "upside down" ...that is, owe far more on their houses than they are worth.

By coincidence, Good Morning America had the same idea and was doing a feature the next morning on this exact topic.

Within an hour, Jake had agreed to be interviewed at his house in Oakley, California, and the camera crews were on their way. He nervously called me multiple times, but fortunately there was just not enough time to think about what he would say. The camera crews would arrive at his house at 4:00.

This morning at 7AM, in pj's and with coffee in hand, I watched in total amazement as the piece aired, and Jake, thanks to ActiveRain, was on national TV, putting a face on all those homeowners across California that are struggling as the housing crisis spins out of control.

To watch the segment which features Jake, click here

Now while it is true I feel an enormous sense of pride by having something to do with bringing this story into the national spotlight, what I really want to emphasize is this: writing posts rich in real estate content derived straight from the trenches of your life in the real estate industry is what ultimately will propel ActiveRain into national prominence as the most respected source of real estate information in the country.

At the risk of repeating my mantra (yes, I have written about this multiple times, search under RainerNation), I ask you once again...is the post you wrote something that could appear as the feature on the front page of the Wall Street Journal? Are enough of our features geared towards national real estate issues that impact Americans?

Here is proof positive the media is watching us!

Perhaps this sounds lofty, but I will once again state that the goal of ActiveRain should be to have the media clamouring to interview our writers. That ActiveRain become the place that everyone thinks of first when they need honest "in the trenches" real estate information.

It is only then that we will unleash the monumental hidden potential in the RainerNation. The potential to be the most influential and respected online authority in real estate is ours for the taking.

Never, ever, underestimate the power, as yet unrealized, of ActiveRain. Your words just may change the world. Or they may just provide help or affirmation out there to one soul in desparate need.

Either way, its all worth it.

Confidential to "Jake": You were fabulous, you were right on, you are the best ever. Heck, you are a STAR!

This is very interesting. I would like to see one of the morning programs do stories on areas that are doing well, holding their own, or sinking like the Titanic....you would be surprised by how many are doing just fine...we do not here that on morning TV though.

Yeah, this didn't get ME any publicity, but that's okay with me. I feel like I have contributed something.

I feel like ActiveRain is somehow a part of something much bigger.

And I now know for certain that our audience includes the traditional media looking for stories by US!

That is just so powerful!

Brian, I think he was numb...it all happened so fast. But how often do chances like this come around? I encouraged him to just go with the flow and tell the world what it felt like to be in his situation.

We are in an era when our industry is front and center with the media.  This is why we can hook the national media on ActiveRain. Where else are the going to get the straight scoop?

Very well written and entertaining!  I certainly wish they had mentioned your name Janet, but it is awesome they were able to find your previous post...

I still think Jake bears a load of responsibility for his actions and I think the story made him seem like a victim.  The government stepping into this mess promises to complicate matters, and just the thought of offering people who made these choices public money makes me a little ill...

What I really like about this post is that you and Jake were not afraid of the media. I've seen other agents who turn down all media contact for fear they'll be portrayed negatively. This is a challenging time in real estate, and who better to tell the story than someone "straight from the trenches." Congrats to you and 'Jake'!

Janet, Way to go! This was huge!

As for Jake and the perception that was created on the air as to why the  problem should be fixed by Uncle Sam is disturbing.  The current situation economically in our country is bittersweet. People in America think they can just spend, spend, spend with no consequences. We needed this in a bad way to encourage consumers to do a check up from the neck up. What their not telling is that the mortgage is just the beginning. If these financially troubled homeowners didn't have 30, 50, or 70 grand of credit card debt at 24.99% they would still have a mortgage that is greater than the home value, but they would still be able to afford the payment.

Again, great work with consistently writing newsworthy pieces.

Congratulations...your caring so much about your clients truly made a difference!  While I agree to a certain extent about quality posts, they aren't always going to be targeted to national news.  I write mostly localism posts for people moving to Lake Norman...nothing earth shattering but about things I wish I had known when I moved here.  Plus, I write a lot about recreational opportunities, growth and development etc.  I think the key is to know your target audience...whether it is national real estate news or local buyers and sellers.

Okay, Terry, I MUST repectfully disagree with this statement. Great content is not contingent on great writing skills. It is contingent upon being curious, observant, and opinionated. They say real estate is local. That is why your market is different from mine, and you can bring something to light that is new and interesting to me and everyone else here on ActiveRain.

Please do not let "writing skills", or your notion that you lack these skills, inhibit you from telling us what is going on in your market. We want to know!

Joe H: Okay now that you've stopped laughing, you should know that my blogging life is separate from my "in the trenches" mortgage life...it has to be, or AR would totally distract me! So when I am deep into mortgage madness, I never expect my blogging life to rear its head. That is why when I came up for air, I assumed it had something to do with some silly Friday afternoon shinanigans by the guys in my office. Now THAT is a lot more likely source of a call like that than Good Morning America. Something to do with ActiveRain never occured to me!

Took a second to transition....plus remember, to me this client is not really Jake. As you now know, he is really Vince.

Thanks for posting this and great job putting "Jake" together with ABC.  I don't know if every post needs to be one that will have the media calling us, I think for the most part, localism should be about the consumer, some of that is just providing local information.  I do believe that the more you put into something the more you will get out.

Good job!  I actually caught his interview on the radio yesterday morning.  It caught my attention not only because it was real estate related, but also because I used to live and sell real estate in the area.  I've been reading how tough Antioch/Brentwood/Oakley have it now with declining values and so many foreclosures and vacant homes. It's a shame.  But, we'll all get through it.

Don: Good Morning producers were actually hoping Jake's house was in Stockton...the national capitol of foreclosures...so I told her this: look up the foreclosure stats in Oakley/Antioch/Brentwood. Trust, me, this area is as bad as Stockton, not to mention "Close enough!"

Carolyn: I have thought about this before and I completely agree that every post should not be geared towards the National media. Heck, we all enjoy and are enlightened by the social aspects and "industry banter"

Where I disagree with you is putting something like I wrote on Localism. The purpose of Localism is for potential clients to learn about an area and the agent that has posted there.

It is for local stories not national stories. There you are writing to the consumer.

ActiveRain should also be a forum for how we in the industry feel about national issues, and a place the media can come to cruise around and know what industry insiders think.

Diane, what you say is true (about knowing you audience), and I for one, do not post to Localism enough.

But I do think that our audience is ultimatley, Americans who buy sell and finance real estate. And writing about issues that impact all of us is an important cog in the wheel.

Just to clarify...I found it funny because that exact thought would have traveled through my mind in the same situation.  I was just ribbing you a bit, mostly out of jealousy for your terrific writing skills...;)  (PS, JK=just kidding in geekspeak.)

I still can't get over the number of responses that seem sympathetic to Jake as if he is an innocent bystander in this process.  Now we see his face, but we see the face of a person who made some poor choices and is now facing the consequences.  Even worse, he is being used as an example to promote legislation that will cost taxpayers money for these types of choices.  He isn't sick.  He isn't injured.  He is obviously capable of working.  Yet we are made to feel bad because he willfully signed papers that most likely were clear how they were going to affect his pocketbook.  Where does it end?  Where does personal responsibility begin?

I think it wonderful you had this experience with exposure, but I also think there is another side to this story that needs to be addressed in honest terms.

Okay, with all the excitement, I have not properly debated with our members about just how sympathetic we should be to Jake.

Joe, what I was trying to point out is when Jake (and millions of others) were signing loan documents....we were in an era when NO ONE believed prices would go down. This guy is 29 years old! Now, I have perspective, because I am older, I tried to use this perspective to guide him, but what did I have working against me?

A gorgeous blond lady who was living with him and sleeping with him. His own brother who felt Jake "owed" him. And a market that showed absolutely no sign of cooling off. 100% financing was the loan de jour, and people were making money hand over fist in California with their real estate. Now this is the scenario in which I was trying to convince Jake NOT to refinance his home on a 100% loan.

What I am trying to say is this: it is easy to see NOW that he made a poor decision. Where I disagree with you is it was certainly not CLEAR at the time that what he was doing would blow up in his face. Even I was taking an educated guess having been involved in Calif real estate for years and years (I actually quit college @ age 21 to become a real estate agent during one of these horrible markets...that's how intensely interested I have been for my entire adult life in California real estate)

And for the record, I DO NOT agree with government bail outs at all, have written several posts about this, probably the most widely read one is this one where I ask this....what if we just did nothing? I believe this is the one where Brian Brady and myself (who usually think alike) were called "free market cowboys"

If not this one, then one a couple of days later about freezing rates is like rent control..... reading these will help you understand I am against gov't intervention, just like you. But I was there when things were nuts in Calif., so do I have sympathy for someone who got caught up? A resounding YES!

I hadn't seen your post about 'what if we just did nothing'.  I have a lot of faith in the free market's ability to correct this mess, and I agree with you completely on that issue.  You just cannot legislate responsibility...

As for Jake, I do feel sorry for him due to his circumstances, but I feel like he threw gas on the fire to make matters worse.  I especially don't like the fact the mainstream media is using him as a example of the mortgage crisis.  The story is sad and elicits sympathy when told from one side, but the whole truth is a little less 'poor me'.

I'm not trying to debate you, Janet...I think you are a great writer, a very thoughtful person, and I have learned much from reading / interacting with you.  I appreciate it.  I feel strongly that this situation we find ourselves in is rooted in everyone wearing the proverbial 'rose-colored glasses'.  It seems so good, so just close your eyes and press on...Oh well.  Time will fix this problem now that it has been identified.

Gosh, Joe, I know you are not trying to debate me. Your opinion is important to me as are all opinions expressed here on AR. And thank you so much for your comments, expecially for the compliments. I just wanted to point out that being sympathetic to someone is not the same as demanding we "do" something about it. Anytime we do a fix that creates another whole slew of problems, as you must know.

That is why I directed you to those other posts. So you would know that: it was not greed. it was not stupidity. it was not something that we could have foreseen.

It just was. And we as a nation need to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and move forward. We'll survive.

I did a Blog yesterday and there was a member that sent in a comment and is helping us with our issue. I don't even know this person.

There are some very wonderful members with active-rain, thanks again for the story.

Congratulations!  I'm glad the media is watching.  More people need to be exposed to the great content that ActiveRain produces, and it is even more important to spread all the news, both good and bad.

Janet,

I'm a little slow in responding but it just goes to show you that the world is really flat!  Your blog caught the attention on a Google or Yahoo search and all of a sudden, you're client is on Good Morning America.
