marketing yourself

We have heard many market reports that 2007 was bad and that 2008 might be worse. For some, 2008 has been a great start, but has slowed down. Do you have a game plan for 2008?  Do you have a business plan?  Or are you just putting your head down just praying that it gets better?

There are many ways to market yourself. The end result is that you are the one that controls your own destiny. Being strong, showing perseverance, open minded, one that thinks outside the box, and determined is a formula for success in my opinion. So what can we look at that would help us to continue to be successful and to grow our business.

Type of marketing plans :

  • Marketing yourself & branding yourself  (Part 1)
  • Blogging  (Part 2)
  • Networking  (Part 3)

target marketing Marketing Yourself & Branding Yourself :  - Part 1

  • Target marketing --  Is very important and can be defined in a few ways, depending on your objective. What we would want to focus on would be age, geography, and top trendsetters in your area. Here is the series on these trendsetters.

--  Baby Boomers & Echo Boomers

--  Single Women

--  The Hispanic Sector

You can also utilize the Localism feature that Active Rain has set up for all of us. This can be applied right here on AR when blogging.

Google

  • Branding --  There is always a conversation that Marketing & Branding is either the one in the same or different. I believe that they are different from one another. I also believe that we can learn so much from Google and how they brand themselves. For many of you that follow my blogs, I have done a whole series on Google and what we can learn from them. The biggest marketable idea is changing up your web site pages or your blog sites.

Marketing ideas

--   HUD Settlement statements - For every client that you closed in 2007, you can send them their HUD sheets as a reminder for tax purposes.

--   Newsletters - Mass marketing by sending quarterly news letters through e-mail. Evening sending your best blogs quarterly or monthly. Basically setting up a drip campaign.  You can use such sites as :

      * * Constant Contact

      * * ACT Contact Manager

      * * Microsoft Outlook

--  Business Cards can be a very cheap from of marketing & advertising. Here is a great list of ways to use them : Business Card tips

--  Active Rain Groups -  There are several different types of groups here on Active Rain that you can join for possible referrals in your area. Realtor Referral Network.  & Referrals Only & Mortgage Referrals Only

--  Data BaseYou are your database....  by : Linda Davis   Linda talks about friends, family, outside vendors, and so much more. Using the sites mentioned above to do a drip campaign for things other than just newsletters.

--  Podcasts & Videos -  A very cheap and effective way to broadcast online.

  • freebies Freebies --  And we all know that we love freebies, especially those freebies that can help us market or move our business.

--  Do you forget things?  Need someone to help you remember things?  Try : jottremember the milk

--  Want to send a stylish newsletter online? myemma.com

--  Find out information about your market, so you can pass it onto your clients. Altosresearch.com

Overall, in my opinion, Marketing yourself and not your company is very important. Sure, using a company's logo or name can help influence others when choosing you. But keep your eye on the ball and always put yourself first. You need to always be thinking outside of the box and always taking in fresh ideas, in order to stay ahead of your competition.

Hi Jeff, aside from the always top notch quality of your writing, you are putting together some really great looking layouts for your posts.

Jeff,
Another start to a great serries.  Sandra, ACT is a contact manager.  It is a little more sophisticated than MS Outlook.  I do agree with Marti, your layouts are getting better.  Maybe it is my screen but your layouts are bigger than my screen so I have to move left and right all the time. AJ

Jeff - Great ideas and resources to build your brand and I agree 100% that your company name should not be the theme of any marketing campaign.  Thank you for another great post and helping to keep us focused on BUILDING A BUSINESS!

MARTI....  thanks for the compliments and kind words.... especially coming from a marketing guru such as yourself.

SANDRA.... why are you parking?  I am not handing out free food or drinks.  lol  I think I gave enough. ;o)

Ah, I see that you took down your parking comment... ;o(     Alan pretty much touched base on this. ACT is very sophisticated and can be a lot to learn.  Constant Contact is less complicated.

ALAN......  thanks for the compliment.  The reason why my layouts might be bigger on your screen is because I write everything in Forefox.  You are probably using Internet Explorer, right?

D.BASS. ....... my pleasure and thanks for stopping by.

DEBBIE.....  I have seen several that have promoted their company's name. Sure, one of the companies is the largest out there...  but in today's day in age, you need to work on your own name. Especially since so many of us will work at 3 different or more companies in a lifetime.  Keep in tuned to the next 2... thanks

I've done well at branding myself and I was born and raised in this area so instead of doing niche marketing, which would have limited me, I've tapped into the many people I know. But I recently decided to start pushing the fact that I'm a Daytona Beach native. That is an extremely rare thing! But it means I know things that most people have no way of knowing.  So that's my current plan that I've already started implementing into my ads and blogs.

MISSY...... never,...seriously, thank you very much for that kind compliment. Hope parts 2 & 3 are just as good.

LISA H. ......   I am sure that is one thing that you have over your competition is that you are long time resident of the area. Born and bread there. That is a great thing to market and brand.

LARRY....  thanks for the polite compliment. And I have to remind you at the end of next week?  the end of the month?  ;o)  Is this a test? lol  I'll try... thanks

KENT..... thanks, my pleasure.

LAGUNA......  thanks for stopping by and for the thoughtful compliment.

Jeff: You are correct that you always need to be marketing yourself and how you are different. How you are different is really the key because otherwise the general public thinks we are all the same. That is so not the case. The ways in which we market and service our clients is all different.

GITA.....  my pleasure and thanks for the kind words and compliments.

MATTHEW.....   the FHA man?  lol....  I read your comment about 15 minutes ago, trying to think what you meant by that comment. Boy, am I a blonde. lol  Branding.... hence that you know that I am the FHA man. I need to get some more sleep.  Yes, you should come up with something. As Brian Brady is America's # 1 mortgage broker. peanuts

SANDRA.... Okay... I went out and bought some peanuts. DO you like cashews?  But do I have to supply the drinks also?

RICH S. .....  150k a year?  Seriously, thanks for that extremely polite compliment.

JILL......   we both totally agree on this.  I see so many just market their company and not themselves. I made the mistake of doing this with my 3rd and 4th companies. I had worked for Ryland Mortgage of Ryland Homes and then I went to Norwest Mtg who is now Wells Fargo. Things I wish people would had pointed out to me when I was newer and younger. By my 4th company, I was only in my 3rd and 5th years in this business.

We get tired of our successful ads and slogans long before our clients do. We've just gone back to a slogan from years ago, "We sell real estate and we're good at it."

A great post about branding and marketing.  I think that too many agents take the whole "branding" thing the wrong way.  When you brand yourself, you don't necessarily brand what you do.  You don't have to market the company you work for but should instead market yourself in that you promote the services you offer - not necessarily your name.  When people go to Google and look for apple pie bakers in Louisiana, that's what they search for. If you are the greatest apple pie baker in Louisiana but you don't promote that fact, just your name, it sort of defeats the purpose.  No one is going to go to Google and look for Renae Bolton.  So, I shouldn't promote my name but the services that I provide.  Does that make sense?

Good start to your 3 part series.  Separating marketing from branding will really help a lot of agents understand and make better decisions when it comes to presenting themselves.  Branding is overlooked way to much by agents and should be focused on more.

ELAINE....  so, you want some candy too?  Maybe I should start charging for these blogs, if I am going to have food and candy during those that read them.  lol   But yes, being open-minded about ideas and thinking outside the box. There are so many things to mention, but you need to start some where, right?

MICHAEL....  my pleasure and thanks for the compliment.

ADAM....   yea, I hate putting so many links in a blog, because I have heard that many won't click on them. But at the same time, I wouldn't be doing my blog and the content justice if I didn't. So it is basically up to the reader to check out the links... if not, you just never know what you might be missing.  Thanks for the polite words...

KEVIN & Monica.... my pleasure and thanks for stopping by and the polite comment.

RENAE.....  I am glad that you picked up on this and realizing the difference. I am not a true expert on this and some of it is my opinion. But I did have someone chime in on my comparison blog, who stated that she majored in marketing... and basically disagreed with me in my statements.  Personally, a degree doesn't always mean everything. I respect those that did get theirs in a specific category per se....  but some things that is taught is based on opinion. So many people confuse facts with opinion, which drives me crazy... lol

But overall, we both see to agree and see eye to eye on what was mentioned.  Thanks for the compliment and for your input.

STEPHEN..... thanks.. I hope you catch parts 2 and 3....it's hard to pick which one was the best out of the 3. I think each one compliments the other. I agree with your statement that branding is way over-looked. Thanks for the compliment.

ROBERT....  thanks... and the girl in the picture is my niece.  ;o) She turns 4 on Saturday, which I will see her then.   I'll check out your post later... thanks
