Moving to Seattle? Here's the Real Scoop About the Rain

By
Managing Real Estate Broker with NextHome Experience 17050

When my Husband and I first began telling friends and Family about our move to the Seattle area, one of their first responses often was, "but it rains all the time there!" or "how are you going to stand all that rain?". If my parents hadn't already lived in Bellevue at the time, I may have been more concerned, but we were assured that it didn't rain much more in Seattle than in other cities...it just rained more often.

.

Seattle averages approximately 36" of rainfall a year. Compare that to other cities such as New York which gets 46.6" or Kansas City Missouri which averages 42" of rainfall per year or Dallas which also has a 36" average.

NOT more Rain....just more rainy days.

In fact, after living here for a while, you'll begin to notice the various degrees of rain: Downpour, RAIN, Sprinkles, Drizzle & Mist (or as I like to call it, "Spit")

The norm is definitely Sprinkles or Drizzle and therefore you'll rarely see a Seattleite using an umbrella unless there's a heavy downpour or reason to be outdoors over a prolonged period of time...think youth Soccer sidelines.

If you're considering making a move here to the gorgeous Northwest, don't let the rain scare you off. The gorgeous Sunny days are more than worth it all. Besides, you may have more of it where you live now...just not as often.

Enjoy the Ride!

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

We have a lot of rainy days in Sacramento, too, during the winter. From April to October, though, it's dry. No summer rain storms. Just sand and heat. But when it rains, it is typically a light rain, sometimes a mist, and it doesn't rain all day, just off and on, here and there. We generally experience 3 or 4 rain storms a year. A rain storm here is like a typical rain in Minneapolis. When it really rains. LOL. It doesn't even rain enough to buy a rain coat, although I finally did break down and buy a coat after six years.

However, my husband is now talking about wanting to move to Seattle. I said the same thing -- it rains all the time. Waah. I went to Seattle in 2000. It was August. I had to buy a coat. :)

Colleen - I like weather!  When I lived in Illinois I enjoyed the summer thunderstorms--not too crazy about those spring tornadoes ;).  Florida had some great cloud bursts, Maine had unforgettable blizzards, so California's weather seems tame by comparison.  I could live without the earthquakes, but that's another post!

Hi Colleen!  I am in Mesquite, Nv.  My roof has a leak since September and we don't really care!  That is how much it rains here.  I would love to live up there.

When my husband retires we are going to RV for a few years and the Seattle area is on the list.  All of these localism posts that have been going up lately are helping us decide where to be and when to be there!

I look forward to meeting you in a few more years, Colleen!

Colleen-

Awww, sheesh!  Now the cat's out of the bag!  If we keep revealing the our little "Oh, yeah, it rains all the time." lie...soon we will be the next California!  Once as people discover The Great Nothwest, they never leave...

are you going to reveal in your next blog that we are the real "EDEN"?!!!   :)

Live good. Be happy.

Colleen- I like how you said this.  My mom lives in Tacoma and I hear all the time that we Californians just whine too much about the rain :)  I think she would like the way you have seperated the rain :) :)

My son loves rainy days. Me, not so much. Humidity is a killer when you have naturally curly hair! I'd need to wear a hat all the time!

I would totally agree with your description of the Pacific Northwest rain. Sometimes it could be described as dreary. You can complain about clouds but on the flip side there are some very beautiful days as well.

  Colleen,

Walked off a plane back from 'Nam in 69' and have been here since. I love this part of the country; you can breathe here, and never take a sunny day for granted. I do remember a June back in the late 90's where we had 29 straight days of gray and showers. No matter where you went, people were not happy. Steve Pool said it best about the myriad classifications we have about our types of rain....He said "rain is just showers with an attitude".  Never used an umbrella, never will.

You might have to put up with more rainy days, but look at the result... The Pacific NW is breathtaking.  It's all in what you get used to... who ever thought people were supposed to live in -60 weather?  I'll take rain over -60 any day, btw.

I like the way you described Rain. It reminded me of the monsoons in India.
