JeannieWhen in need of creative genius, where else would I turn, but

 to the Rain.

A friend of mine has found herself on the decorating committee for her daughter's prom.

The theme is "Arabian Nights"

and she has asked me for creative help.

Well, I'm thinking if one stager could be helpful...just imagine what several hundred stagers could contribute! woman thinking

 creative genius

I'm asking all of you very talented stagers to really stretch your imagination...what would you do, what would you use to create an Arabian nights atmosphere?

Arabian Paradise Kit- by Stumps PromSharon...check out this arabian theme set from www.stumpsprom.com  I have planned numerous party events.  I suggest you just simply google prom themes.  You will find an amazing array of ideas.  I don't know what the prom budget is, but this package was around $800.00 I think.  You can view a lot of the pictures and find that many of the items the seniors themselves can make for little money.  I would also suggest that if you are going to use lots of tuile go on the internet and purchase it.  For one of the last events I did, I was able to buy it on line for next to nothing in large yardage rolls.  Way cheaper then going to a local fabric store.

Sharon:  I can't believe it - that was MY prom theme - way back in the olden days!!!  Since it was my idea, I got to chair the decorating!  It was held in the HS gym, and everything was hand-made, from fields of paper flowers stuck into chicken wire to the painted scenes of starry night skies with flying carpets!  We made a large papier mache cave (over a wood & wire armature) for Ali Baba, and a papier mache water fall (using a tall step ladder as the base, a water pump and wading pool).  Have fun - we did!  Julie

Julie  I'm a little disappointed you didn't include any photos of your Arabian self!  That's another whole blog post...high school prom photos!  I love the cave and waterfall ideas!  I'm glad I brought back such wonderful memories for you.  Thanks for the help!

I've done theme development and helped out for multiple years at local high schools for prom events.  A cheap and easy way to make palm trees is to get some free carpet roll tubes from your local carpet store.  Make a wooden base out of either a 12" diameter circle of plywood or 12" x  12" plywood square and attached a 2 ft tall piece of 2 x 4 timber, upright in the middle of the base.  Slide the carpet tube, cut to whatever tree height you want over it.  Cut palm frond shapes out of poster board or green paper.  Open up metal coat hangers (untwist and straighten them) and tape long wise on the leaf/frond so that at least 12" of the wire hanger extends beyond the base of the frond/leaf.  You can now bend the wire and frond as desired and just stick it in the top of the carpet roll. You can also add dark colored balloons as coconuts.  Feel free to e-mail me if you want me to e-mail a picture to you (can't seem to include it in this post response).

Also, you can use lots of gauzy fabric to drape around as in oasis tents. and pyramid scenes painted on large paper drop clothes.

 Good luck!

I'd say lots of (colorful) sheer fabric hanging dramatically. Pinks, purples...rich, bold colors. And lots of gold accents. I guess that's what I picture when I think of an Arabian harem or palace! lol

I'm in the same predicament!

I'm in charge of decorations for our "Arabian Nights" prom. Do you have any specifics on how to create the "waterfall"? I love that idea! Also, are there any photos available?

We also need to cover a very large wall in the cafeteria. I would love to create a dessert with camels...somehow. Can this be done with fabric and paper silohettes? I'm not sure that painting a background is feasible since the area is so large.

Any ideas, photos or resources are greatly appreciated!

Janine:  Sorry but I have no personal experience decorating with this theme.  I wrote the post to help a friend who was on a prom committee.  She did supply me with some pictures after their prom and you can see them at my update post.

You will have to contact Julia Maher directly to get more info on her waterfall idea.

Have you considered asking an art dept. to help with the decorating?  If your school doesn't have an art dept. what about a local collage?  Maybe there are some art students that could help create the camels.

Thank you for your input Sharon. I will try to contact Julia Maher to see if she can remember any specifics about the waterfall. The photos are very inspirational!
