I have been kicking this idea around about changing my static website for sometime now.  Ever since I started blogging, I really never give that site much attention.  I mean really, why do I need to have it?  Well, for starters, it's another place on the internet for someone to find you. It has a Page Rank of 4.  If you use it right, you can use all of these little sites to help your other sites gain popularity in your search rankings.  If you notice one thing about my blogs and websites, I try to mention them on each of the other sites with some quality back links.  And by that, I mean don't just mention your website like this...  "You can visit my website at http://gotbob4homes.com and start your home search."  You have to really use all that HTML will give you.  Bold letters, alt tags and some descriptive anchor words.  Like this... "When you are looking for real estate in Frederick MD, I would say stop by my website to start house hunting."  Hover over the links...see that little gem? It's call "alt tag" you have it here when you highlight your words and click the Hyperlink tool (or ctrl-K for you power users) and put something in the description area.  It helps Google define your website.

Back to me changing sites... In this whole process, I have been looking to learn Joomla, Mambo or Drupal to actually make my site.  I know, you're like Joo-pal what?  When you sign up on Bluehost, you have a free tool to install various website software called Fantastico.  (If you are going to self host your websites, I highly recommend Bluehost. CLICK HERE TO SIGNUP FOR BLUEHOST.COM NOW.)  Wordpress is one of them and that's the platform I use for my blog. Anyways, Joomla and friends are various open source CMS (Content Management Software.)  They have a lot of components that you can really tie a lot of items up neatly in one place.  It just takes some time getting used to and can be overwhelming to learn. But I wasn't giving up, I was just running out of time and also tired of paying for Advance Access to host my site, since I have all of this space.  The traffic wasn't there to justify the expense.

One of the finer things about Twitter, is when you think out loud on there, people are listening.  I was throwing out some of my concerns and thought about what I was doing.  Mostly asking everyone if they knew an easy CMS application.  Jeff Turner kept ribbing me, why would I even want to fight with Mambo or Joomla... CAUSE I WAS BOUND AND DETERMINED, that's why!!!  (his suggestion was a wise one...use Wordpress for Content Management.)  Believe me, I did that too.  I have created multiple sites with that too.

But then came along, @Virtuallin, she approached me about my problem and offered to help.  That she did...she offered to put something together for me to look at and then gave me the keys to break it.  Not quite like that, but just as dangerous.  Turns out she is the Joomla Queen.  Go ahead and search for something related to Joomla, I am sure one of her many sites will show up.  We have been working on it for a while now (mostly her.)  And almost ready to unleash it on the world with my old domain on it.  I will let you take a look at it shortly...I am not done tooting Cheryl Allin's horn.  Yes, that's her real name.   @Virtuallin is her Twitter name and also the play on words for her company.  Cheryl is a Virtual Assistant.  Whenever you think you're too busy to get stuff done, but not confident enough to hire a personal assistant for the office, you'll need to think about a Virtual Assistant.  There are quite a few out there waiting to help.  Cheryl does more than websites, but that is her specialty.  Her prices are very reasonalable, even for a cheap skate like me.  Not only did she put together a fine website, for a very reasonable price threw in her new Drip Mail program.  (you need some like this to help maintain new leads.)

If it wasn't for Twitter and me thinking out loud amongst my followers, I would still be racking my brain.  Cheryl has helped alleviate  my problem and free up my time to look for business instead of maintaining my business.  That's only one of the many benefits of a Virtual Assistant.

As promised take a look at what I used to have and what I will have soon.

Again, if you're looking for some great website help, think about calling (or Twittering @Virtuallin)

Yeah, that's coming from me...Mr. "I'll do all that techie stuff myself"

I'm not into building my own site -- the Real Estate Tomato built mine -- Bucking the Real Estate Trend.  However, I am all for VA's and am getting into Twittering a bit more.  Time is the problem of course.  Will look for your virtual friend and follow your reports on how your net site evolves.  I blew my static site up months ago -- that was a no brainer after I dug my claws into research.  Thanks for your post!

I've been meaning to get acquainted with Joomla for ages. Just for the heck of it.   I haven't been on Twitter as much lately.  Participating in 10 different conversations at once was making my eyes cross.  :-) I think if messages on Twitter were "threaded" my eyes would probably uncross. Anybody got a little TwitApp that threads conversations?

Well, it sounds great as I know you like me have wanted a new solution for some time, I may call and pick your brain. How many letters in the drip campaign? I like mine, been using it since 99.00 at 29.99 per month, but 9.99 is much better. My letters go out for 6 months and it has brought many buyers back by staying in touch. I will go follow @virtuallin and see what I can learn.

Nice to have found a VA that can do ALL that.

OK. I just did a quick Joomla install on one of my sites with CPanel/Fantastico. Now to figure out how to create a couple quick pages, customize the appearance, and basic stuff like that.

Geez, Carney, you do know I had real work to do today, didn't you?

Whoa, good morning.  Thank you for the comments and the the little star.  Muchas.

Cheryl, I did this on purpose...so you will start your series on Joomla.  : )  The conversations can be hard to follow.  But the good part is...you don't have to follow them.  You can leave off and pick up where ever you like.

Klarque,  Believe me, there is a lot of reading to do hear. Good Luck.

Dwayne, And they love you for it!

Linda, She does and then some...

Missy, I really haven't dug deep into the drip campaigns yet.  I do know you can create your own too.

Neal,  sometimes its hard to let go of some task.  Thanks.

Sarah, Twitter to me is like a big think tank with fun conversations.

Steve, Ain't that the truth?  Thanks for stopping by

Miaram, Don't be afraid to ask when you do.  It's a lot chew off.

Susie, The Tomato does some nice work, a VA could help you with that too.

GotBob~ Its been fun seeing Cheryl get that site up and running, and I will second the motion that she is one talented gal! She is single-handedly transitioning my site to a Joomla site and I am flabbergasted at how quickly she does it. Not to mention her SEO skills!

New site looks good.  You may want to make it even more about searching for homes as that seems to be what most consumers are looking for. I like the home search button at the top of the page.

Hiya Bob! What a fantastic post (and not just 'cause you mentioned li'l ol' me)! I'm happy to say that another Twitter connection I made with @AndyKaufman has led to an upcoming Webinar on getting started with Joomla (and why on earth you would want to.) It's scheduled for Friday, 2/29 at 11am PST.  It will cover what a Content management system is, some basics on how Joomla works and some ideas as to why you might choose to use it.

Like running a blog in Wordpress - running your main site in Joomla gives you ownership, flexibility, scalability, better SEO than many 'providers' and the opportunity to create your own content - whether that's 10 pages or 1000 or more.  Yes, as with anything there is an initial learning curve - but many people I've worked with say that they eventually find it much easier and faster working in Joomla than they do AA, alamode, Z57 and others.

I won't hijack Bob's post further, but feel free to check out my blog (in Joomla) and add me to your Twitter - holler at me anytime if you have any questions!

VERY INTERESTING!  I am currently paying $70 / month (for IDX and Web Hosting).  With your new site, can you add custom pages?  Or build custom searches (i.e. homes for sale in XYZ subdivision)?

As for Twitter, I don't know if I'm quite there yet, but it is my goal in the near future!

Ed, You know where to ask for help. ;)

Eliese,  Do that with your pictures too.  i.e. "Frederick County Horses in the pasture" :)

Christy, That's the power of groups too.  If everyone problem shoots together you come up with some great ideas.

Michael, You don't have to wait until you get busy...they do stuff that you don't like to do, like lick envelopes too!

Kerry, The number of pages and possiblities are endless.  Look at that Map mashup she made for local schools.

I have been using Joomla (1.5) for my GarageHomesUSA site since I started it last summer.  At that time, it was RC2.  It rocks.  It is better than WordPress at CMS, but not a good blog... so I use WP for my blog.  The plug-ins and mods that you can make with Joomla make the site seem like I should be paying a lot more than I have paid for it... to me at least.

How great that you have support to get yourself up and running on Joomla!  That's the wonderful thing about using a VA.  You can find one who specializes in the specific tasks you need accomplished and know that you have a professional working that task!

Also... I read Thesa's post about her picture, and I saw what you did... selecting picture 2 and cropping it for her.  That was very sweet.  A very nice touch !

Joomla is an incredible tool for Realtors.

After years of having a static site, we installed Joomla! -- and cannot believe we waited so long.

Within 3 months, we were on the first page of Google for all of the local terms we targeted.

So flexible!
