From a distance of only ten feet, entrance to the courtyard beyond seemed a formidable task.  Impossible.
A fools errand, this.  The high sunwashed adobe wall and the great iron throw-bolt seemed to say "go away."

I almost did just that.  No one, after all, was expecting me, and see?  The gate is barred, padlocked.  I nearly turned away.

The journey had been long, the day hot, and I was tired.  Now I was discouraged as well.  Yet I took another step forward, toward the locked gate, and saw that it was not locked at all.  With ease, I slid the bolt and entered my intended destination, thankful that I had not turned away when the prospect seemed hopeless.

If you're walking through hell, don't stop.

Mike,
Hmmm.  I get your message that if we keep going and tough it out, there will be something better after we make our way through.  But my curiosity wants to know what was on the other side of your "door".  0:)

Mike, I know the feeling - I was walking through hell yesterday, but I managed to survive.

A well delivered message. We all have those periods, and by pressing on, we only become the wiser.

Echoing Cynthia's thought -- So why were you walking through hell in the first place, and what was behind the door that made it all worthwhile??  Inquiring minds want to know.  :-)

Nicely written, and quite encouraging. Too often we make up reasons not to move forward!

Mike, I think I understand your post.  You've gone quite philosophical with this one.  Have you been to hell and back?

My neighbor's 5 year old heard us talking about your post's title.  This is his response:  "Of course not, your shoes will melt!"

Love the photos, Mike!

Vicki,

Thanks for stopping by to comment.

Kent,

Little kids say the darndest things!  Who was that, Art Linkletter?  LOL

Dan,

Not nearly.  Sounds like a good movie, though.

Lenn,

Keep on keeping on...  That's what my Grandma used to say.  She and Grandpa lived on the Eastern Shore of Virginina, in Onancock.

Terry,

You're welcome.  One more call...  That's the lesson!

Richard,

Thanks for the encouragement!

Matt,

I'm doing better, thanks.  Still home today, though, but definitely on the upswing.

Cheryl,

This is a respectable post, not the National Enquirer!  LOL

Larry,

I know they say that the first step is the hardest, but in my six decades, I've found the opposite to be true more often.  First steps are taken with fanfare, high hopes and marketing pieces.  It's more often the next step that's more important.

Frank,

Thanks for an encouraging comment!

Michael,

I'm glad you kept on going! Tomorrow will likely be better.

Jesse & Kathy,

I'm almost out of the woods with this virus, or whatever it was.  Thanks for the chicken soup.

Susie,

Thanks for the kind words.

Cynthia,

Thanks for being the first to comment this Sunday morning.  You and Cheryl ought to join me in the courtyard for a refreshing beverage.  I'll go look for a photo to add here to assuage your collective curiosity.

Hi Mike, I think that you post likely hit home with MANY of the AR readers sticking it out through this challenging market.

I think their is a quote about success being just one step ahead of not giving up, but I am too sleepy still to remember it!

I don't know if I would equivicate life's challenges as "going through Hell" if that was your intended analogy, actually they are part of going through life!

I think that even if we don't "win" we are winners by simply trying!  In my mind "going through Hell" would be: unbearable pain, on-going stress, endless fear or absence of hope.

Great Post Mike! Most people stop at that moment when their heads tell them to stop, but if they will just keep on, they might be surprised what is on the other side!

Sometimes it's just your perception that needs to change.  By looking more closely, you were able to see past the lock and get through the door.  Glad you are feeling better, Mike!

Yes. When I am driving through Fresno, I hit and gas and don't look up until it is a speck in the rearview mirror.

Israel,

I didn't have Fresno in mind, particularly...  Now I have to check with Google.

Lisa,

Thanks for the comment; it's good to see you.

Susan,

Keep on trucking!

Marey,

It's a little like the cartoon of the frog with his hands wrapped around the throat of the stork that's trying to swallow him...  LOL

Joan,

You're right, of course.  The metaphor is a little over the edge, but it sits well on the page.  Thanks for commenting.

Duane,

That is my first introduction to Helen.  Thanks!

Janie,

After you've had your coffee, come on back and share the quote.  Sounds like a good one.

Mike - It is easy to get discouraged, but as your story illustrates, it's important not to give up too early before success is realized.  It's a good reminder that we should have faith in ourselves and our skills.

Yes Mike, it's kinda like the silver lining?? I get it. Although your analogy was appealing to me. Yes, I'm weird but oh well. I love to explore old buildings amongst weeds and hope to find old coins on the floors. I'll let up now. It just looked to good to me to be hell. :-) It would be nice for you to come and visit sometime. Where'd ya go?

Later in the rain~Deb

Hey it just hit me....i before e, except after c...unless you're writing "weird" ...spell check caught it.

Dawn,

Thanks!  Keep up the pace.

Deb,

I've been sick as a dog, but I think I'm over it.  We're driving through Texas to Oklahoma in the middle of April to work cattle.  I'll have to see how far off the beaten path you are.

Bill & Barbara Jo,

Thanks for stopping by to visit!

Eric,

Lynn,

We'll see you soon over on your blog.  Thanks for commenting.

Marchel,

I hope I didn't hide it too well!  My Grandma used to sing a Sunday School chorus called "Hide It Under a Bushel?  No!"

Mike, some times we just have to keep on "Keepin On".  It makes me think of a song we sing at church .  There may be sorrow for the night, but joy comes in the moring.  Sometimes we just have to hang on til the SON comes out.
