In this digital age that we live in, there exists a startling contradiction of unprecedented access to information and self-imposed isolation. Everything you could ever wish to know on most any subject is a mere mouse click away, and yet this newfound autonomy pulls us further away from the world around us. Neighbors are less neighborly. Personal interaction eschewed for virtual interaction. Instant gratification on our own terms.
Need a plumber? We turn to our computers. Need an advanced degree? We turn to our computers.
Need anything? We turn to our computers.
While we have instant access to the information we seek, we lack the ability to see the person providing it. We can't inherently trust the author like we would if he or she was personally referred to us by Aunt Netty or Uncle Bob.
As such, it is vital to consider the source of information on this medium. As a Scottsdale Realtor, I put out reams of Real Estate market reports, opinions and information. I fully expect the reader to take it all with a grain of salt. After all, who am I but a 2-dimensional profile picture and a bio?
In an effort to shed a little light on the person behind the job title, following is the first corner of my life's collage. Words can be manipulated to craft a message. I'll simply let these old pictures tell my story. You might call it transparency. You might call it vanity. I just call it me.
Paul - I won't embarrass you by calling you a "cutie" like the ladies above did, but you were a good-looking kid. Your family looks very happy in these photos. Your mom and dad look stunning, perhaps like a couple you would see on an episode of "Magnum P.I." or "Hart to Hart" in the late 70's or very early 80's. Great montage of photos. I may have to do my own sometime. As for the soundtrack, that is probably my very favorite Sting song, and I can't help but sing along when I hear it. The imagery in the lyrics is incredibly evocative for me.
Paul - Your intriguing line "unprecedented access to information and self-imposed isolation" is eloquently put. I enjoyed getting to know you better through the music and the photos. Thanks for sharing.
Paul.... I am just coming from Part 2.... trying to shuffle my way through traffic, leading back to this post. lol Seriously though.... it's tough to say, what we want others to see and how much. I just wrote a series in regards to marketing and in regards to part two, blogging.... I think for the most part, the consumer wants to see content. I think this is a nice little segment of who you are, as you said, the person behind real estate. But I guess overall, it all comes down to how you and I feel about it and how the consumer views it... and what they want from out blogs. Overall... each person is different and I always believed, it never hurts to try. Now, back to the baby pictures....
Jeff: the best way I can put it is that I want the clients that do care. I care about my clients as people first and customers second, and hope to attract like-minded consumers. I don't epect to garner any additional business by posting some baby photos, but I do want those who choose to work with me or read my blog to see the person behind the content.
PAUL - What an incredible journey down memory lane. I can imagine how long this must have taken you. Your words were thought-provoking as well. I think that you've shown why blogging is important. While it's not a recommendation from someone, at least it's more than a static website or postcard which does nothing to show who we are as people. On a side note, Aunt Netty is as good as gold, and I'd use anyone that she recommends. However, I trust Uncle Bob about as far as I can throw him!
I don't know that it will generate a ton of new business but it will show you as a real person... seems like as a consumer it would sure beat looking at yet another Realtor glamour shot, right? Nice job, buddy.
Katerina: Not sure exactly. My mother asks me every single day what happened to my hair.
Adam: Thanks for taking the stroll with me. You wouldn't believe how much time this required, but it was worth it. Looking through all of the old photographs was quite moving. Thanks for the kudos.
Jesse: That was my thought. This is not business generation, but solidification. I think it helps build a comfort level. At least, I hope it does.
Hi Vanessa, for whatever reason, this one has given me a few fits as well. I usually find that refreshing the page once or twice will do the trick when it doesn't feel like loading. Fortunately, there are 4 other segments you can try. Yes, I got a little carried away :)
Paul it looks like we are about the same age and have a lot in common from those pictures. I also loved little league as a kid and going to the lake, playing soccer and just enjoying life in general. Glad you pictures could share the first part of your life with us, I wish I had that many photos to share.
