Ethnic-inspired trends in decorating - and staging?

Ducking past a woman heaving a brown pandanus basket into her shopping cart, and dodging another reaching for a yellow bird print solimene platter, I entered the bazaar.  No, I wasn’t vacationing in an exotic location – I had only traveled to the local mall, and found myself unwittingly tossed into the throes of Target’s Global Bazaar, in stores until February 17.  Featuring over 1000 items from 23 countries, this temporary bazaar lends a splash of color and texture to the corners of Targets across the country.  Whether you’re a fan of Target or not, there seems to be a bit of something for everyone at this feast for the eyes.

Target began its Global Bazaar in 2005, and it seems like it’s getting bigger every year.  So what’s all the hype?  Is this just Target hoping to fill the post-holiday merchandising gap?  I decided to do a little investigating, and found that numerous sources are confirming my hunch:  ethnic-inspired décor is hot for 2007.

Since I left Target an hour later with a basket load worthy of a Maharaja, does this mean my staging inventory is now full of batik vases and sari-inspired bedding?  Not quite.  While I’m definitely not against using a few of these items to add a little spice, they’re like everything else – best in moderation.  As stagers, we can’t just jump onto any decorating bandwagon that comes along.  Not only would we be wasting money on items which may quickly date themselves, but we would also run the risk of alienating some potential buyers.  Staging is the art of making a property appeal to the widest range of buyers possible, and not everyone gets excited at the sight of zebra print ... nor will zebra print emphasize the strong points of most properties!

I guess Target's bazaar will have to do until I get the chance to visit Marrakech and Agra.

Ann -

Well written!  I, myself, am a Target enthusiast and always get excited to visit the bazaar section for the first time every year.  Unfortunately, I stop short of actually buying anything.  Like you, I realize that some things just scream - NOT TIMELESS!  I just sigh at all the wonderful things I've seen and walk away...The things that can be used in a variety of ways are things that sell first and since I can never time the 'need' with the first week of availability, I leave it at the store.

Ann, I am not into ducking and dodging at stores.....LOL

But it sounds like you had fun and that is all that matters.  Me I would only have been ducking and dodging for the exit.

I call Target the "Happiest Place on Earth".  I was there last week and found the bazaar but I guess I was late because it was very picked over already.  I never knew this was a yearly event.  I did buy a Quan Yin statue and some Capice shell vases for my next vacant which has a spa/modern feel.  I had to walk around the store repeating the theme in my head so I could keep on track.

It is enticing to buy exciting and unique pieces but you are exactly right- everything in moderation.

Ann, I love the Global Bazaar @Target!   I will say that, given Target's standards and usual inventory, it's a breath of fresh air....kind of like Pier One meets Target.

I found that the Global items are a bit pricey, but if you wait a month, you can get some great deals when it all goes on sale (in order to make room for the summer garden merchandise).

Kimberly and Gina - you're both right that the best/most useful stuff goes first. Maybe it's better for our pocketbooks that that is the case!

Val - I'll keep my eyes peeled for the bargains!

George - understandable. Any time I go shopping I have to make sure I'm well-rested and well-fed. Ducking, dodging, and bargain-hunting is not easy!

Gina's comment about the "Happiest Place on Earth" cracked me up. I couldn't agree more. What a feast for the eyes!

But like Kimberly, I tend to enjoy the view rather than purchase. However, if you swing by my profile, you will see that I picked up a couple of things this year. Let's play find-the-Target-Global-Bazaar-merchandise-in-the-after-photo!

Ann, thanks for the post. One of the many things I love about AR and our staging community is that people here are wired like me. I squeal with delight at the Target Global Bazaar and my husband looks at me like I'm insane. Here we all "get it" :-)
