What Happens When You Build a Highway Instead of An Airport?

By
Real Estate Agent with Integrity Real Estate Group

Ask the residents of Northern Virginia who drive through the Springfield "mixing bowl"  everyday and they may tell you that an airport would be preferable to the 50 ramps and 20 lanes they deal with everyday.  Ask a tourist driving through and you can bet they would rather be flying over than trying to navigate their way through the maze.  In 1945 this same area was the location of a 3,000 foot long unpaved runway as part of the Springfield Airport

The tiny airport offered fuel and maintenance facilities for small aircraft.  One of the mechanics at the airport in the late 1940's was Charlie Kulp who is best known in our area for his acrobatic flying in the Bealton Flying Circus which still operates today and is a great place to go and watch the amazing flying acrobatics.

Our family moved to Springfield in 1955 and by then there were no traces of the airport visible in the area.  By looking at the map that was included in the book "Abondoned and Little Known Airfields" it was easy to see that the location of the airport is where the neighborhood of Springfield Estates was built.

Unlike the nearby community of Burke which was the proposed original site for Dulles International Airport, Springfield Airport was never designed to be more than a small airfield and only was in existence for seven years.

Today pilots who fly small aircraft have a choice of airfields scattered throughout Northern Virginia including four local public airports and another 64 throughout the state.

Stafford Regional Airport

Good post. I had no idea that such heavily trafficked areas existed outside California.

Cindy, I try to avoid the Springfield Mixing Bowl at all costs.  If you know that you'll be traveling through that way, you automatically have to just add a cushion of at least 20 minutes to your estimated travel time, just in case.  Luckily I don't have to pass through that mind-boggling set of overpasses, ramps, and congestion too often.

Interesting.  When I learned of the planned airport for Stafford County, all I could think was, "this are is really booming isn't it?"  And Stafford has boomed.  With the new medical center there, Stafford is definitely "on the map".

Not everyone has to get to DC to work any more.

Brian-I drive through the mixing bowl all the time without incident.  I learned to drive crossing  the 6 lanes of traffic to get from one side of the road to another to make an exit at 50 mph.  They did resolve most of the cross over issues so now it is just a matter of remember which ramp to follow.  Gotta love VDOT!

Lenn-with more options for telecommuting it doesn't seem necessary for everyone to be trying to drive to DC at 7 am in the morning.  Now if I could fly over it like my neighbor does when he heads out that would be ideal!

Cool piece of history.  I'll look at the interchange differently the next time I drive through.

Tina-I've been blogging about some of our fun and unusual local history for months.  Some of it has been a fun learning process for me and a trip down memory lane from when we first moved to Springfield in 1955.  Yikes that makes me old :-)

Pat-some of those 18 wheelers now sitting on the ramps from 495 to 95 south would be right in the way of the landing zone.  Gives new meaning to the term fly over.

Bill and Barbara Jo-thanks for taking my tours with me.  It is fun letting everyone in on some of the history of our area.  This post was inspired by my son talking about when he got his pilots license his first year of college and was flying over the area with an instructor who was telling him about the Flying Circus in Bealton.  His dad was a pilot too so we have a bit of a connection to the sky!

Cindy...I had the "pleasure" of going up in one of those planes at Bealton and did some acrobatics.  It's similar to driving in the mixing bowl.  You just want to close your eyes.  You're better off avoiding both.  Always,

Cheers,

Kathleen

A great little airport in New Jersey....Bader Field in Atlantic City...just got the axe.  Very close for small planes and helicopters to get to the casinos.  I'm sure they'll be building a mega-casino instead.

Vickie - Northern Virginia is #2 after LA!

Cindy - I used to hate driving north in 95 into the bowl because I had to maneuver correctly to get into the correct lane(s) for 495N.  And that's before the bowl was supersized!!!

Kathleen-That would be so cool.  Unfortunately I have a "weak" stomach when it comes to rolls and loops on planes or roller coasters.  My mom went barnstorming in the 30's.  I just get to watch from the ground.

Chris-Virginia has over 300 private airports for pilots of the little Cessena's to land in.  Some of them aren't much more than a little bit of a grass strip.  To bad for the folks looking for away to avoid the Jersery Turnpike!

Tchaka-I laughed when they said the mixing bowl would solve the traffic issues in Springfield.  Now we just have people on ramps lost and trying to fiugre out how to get down and turn around :-)
