Spiderwick Chronicles - Not Really A Review by Bill Roberts

Yesterday we went to see Spiderwick Chronicles. It is a Nickelodeon production so I thought it must be "kid friendly." It just goes to show how out-of-touch I am. The special effects were great. It is a combination of "live" actors and animation. I don't know how they do it but it's great. It was kind of like a Harry Potter movie, which is why Irene wanted to see it. It scared her, so I was satisfied.

When all was said and done it turned out to be a CHICK FLICK. It just goes to show you that you can't judge a movie by its poster or trailer.

I would say its worth going to see, but leave the youngest at home. It's too scary for them (I think).

All's well that ends well, I suppose.

Hey Bill.  I am a new active rain member and saw your blog.  I have to agree with you on the movie.  I saw it last week with my three sons.  It was OK, but my youngest son got kinda scared!!  Great effects though!!

My kids are 6 and 7 they REALLY want to see this movie! Do you think it is too much for kids their age?

Heather, That's a close call. There was a man seated near us that had five little kids with him (all younger than yours I think) who had no noticeable problems. I kept thinking however that they shouldn't be there.

Bill- Well, my youngest son, 5 years old, just absolutely loved it. Of course, he is a very wise thinker. All the way home he was discussing and telling me how he had to write the book and asked how he could make the pages of the book really old. He then went on to tell me how we was going to make the circle around our house. He thinks about all the story line and then wants to invent things just like they have in the movie. He was not scared at all. I am glad we brought him because the imagination is such a wonderful thing to nourish. We also got to see it in IMAX.

Katerina, I didn't realize it was also available in IMAX until after we saw it. That would have been good.

BTW Are you in need of the toadstool circle?

I have seen several of the Harry Potter Movies in IMAX and I am amazed at the effect.  It is like the difference between seeing the movie and being in the movie. Not only is the large screen a thrill, but the sound is remarkable.

I will look forward to seeing Spiderwick

I think it is always difficult to generalize about the appropriate age for young kids and movies.  It so depends on the individual child.  I think the best you can do, if their friends have seen it and they want to go, is go with them and be prepared to talk with them about the movie afterwards.

Ted, I gues you are right about that. However, I'm glad I don't have to deal with it.

I think, in general, if your children have read the books, they will know whether they are going to be able to deal with the movie.  If they are too young to read the books, it's probably a good idea for parents to check them out so you know what to expect when you see the film.

This goes for Harry Potter as well.  Harry Potter's plotlines (and appropriate reading/viewing ages) age with him, getting heavier and more serious as they go along.

Cindy, I'm just glad that that is all behind me. Raising small children in this day and age is no treat.
