Large Real Estate Companies vs Small Independents

By
Real Estate Agent with Horizon One Realty

I started my career with a larger company because I felt that I needed that big name to make me sucessful.  I have seen some benefit in starting with a larger firm but as I grew in my career, I saw that people that did business with me, were the results of my prospecting or personal referrals. They were more interested in my ability to represent them as their agent than what company I was a part of.  I know that larger companies have more access to corporate relocation but I rarely get any of that business but when I do, I give up a greater portion of my commission in referral fees.  Training is good when you start but is one month of class training worth a 30-50% commission split?  I could have invested less into taking classes towards continuing education and designations.  Don't get me wrong, I am pleased with the company that I chose to start my career but I feel that people would do business with me regardless of what company I was with as long as I provide superior customer service.  Am I missing something?

Hi Reginold, It's funny because just this morning I encountered this situation. I have started my own company after 5 years with Keller Williams (which is a terrific company and I'd recommend it to anyone). I was asking one of my clients for some paperwork to switch her listing over (with my broker's blessing) and she said that she didn't feel comfortable with a "one realtor company." I find that funny because we are all "one realtor companies." I explained to her that it's possible to hire a great agent at a small company and not so great agent at a large company, but as long as you are hiring an experienced agent it is the agent you should consider, not the company. I don't know what her decision is going to be, but I definitely know now that there will be a certain segment of the public that needs to be convinced that agent is more important than company.
