Turning Old Car Tires into Roof Shingle Tiles Made of Rubber - An Environmental Solution Worth a Look

Believe it or not used tires can be made into roofing tiles and it turns out they have many advantages over other roofing materials. Tires into roofing; old tires made into roof tiles is be is being done. There is a plant that is recycling 40,000 tires a day for roof tiles; so far it is the largest. They cut the tread into little squares and then coat them with a bunch of large granular sized sand pebbles and you stack them on the roof as tiles and they are suppose to work great. More factories are opening and a few are coming online right now.

Their focus is to develop a strategy to deal with all the tires we throw away and using these old tires and rubber materials that meets certain criteria to make things out of. On the mark, Lance. How about the millions of tires dumped into the oceans as replacement reefs? Crazy. I like the idea of cushioning playgrounds with recycled tires. Always learn something here.

Great find, Lance! Andrew, I think I remember hearing last year that at least one such replacement reef had fallen apart and was wreaking havoc on its surroundings. This idea sounds much better.

Tires into roofing material is a great idea. Prior to moving to Maryland, I lived in Monmouth County, New Jersey, and like Andrew, I've also seen many playgrounds that have already used old tires for their surface. Both ideas are very effective ways of re-using old tires.

Well, this is certainly interesting stuff. I think it's definately something warranting a look into.

Great article. This sounds like a great idea and the more we can re-use our trash on the planet the better. Helps with the wasted tires and the mosquito problems also. I have seen the playground materials used from old tires also which beats a skinned knee on the concrete like when I was a kid.

People are already using discarded used tires for the actual roofing. They simply cut the tires into lengths and attach them like adobe mission tiles on the roof. The cutting process must be difficult, but the roof should last forever.
