You do not have a clue as to why your business is dropping off besides sales are down? Declining of sales is a symptom, not the problem. Perhaps you need to look inside your company and inside yourself for clues. To start, you need to become a business sleuth, always observing what is going on and being done. Let's find a few clues that provide insight into a declining business, perhaps yours.

You cannot have a business without an employee. It takes at least one employee to serve customers, even if that one employee is the owner. You should take employee clues seriously, as they herald things to come. Something is not right if you continue to have low staff morale, high absenteeism, pilfering of company resources on the rise, time is a resource, and accidents are up, as is turnover. These are but a few clues of business decay. Customers also leave many clues when dissatisfied with your products and services. When you start to experience customer retention problems, order size and frequency declines, and complaints are on the rise, the handwriting is on the wall. Break down all barriers to doing business with your customers; make it easy for them to do business with you, not the other way around. Management style also drops a few clues why business is off, especially in companies that stagnate themselves with poor communications, break promises, and practice micro management. All are destructive in any organization, from family to factory.

Here are a few clues for you. Chances are your policies and procedures are inhibiting and need revising. Yes, I know that's the way you have always done it. More than likely your benefit package is archaic, outdated, and of little loyalty value. If a customer has a lifetime value (LTV), surely a good employee has one too. Do you know either? I bet you cut your training budget to save a buck not realizing training is the super glue of performance, productivity, and profitability. In reality, the underlying reason sales are off is that you are out of sight, out of touch, and out of mind when it comes to dealing with your employees and those you serve. Remember, here a clue, there a clue, everywhere a business clue.

Wishing you a record year in 2007!
