blogging

Have you jumped onto the blogging bandwagon? Have you incorporated blogging into your business plan? It shouldn't matter if you are busy or slow, because blogging should be a part of your 2008 business plan. The NAR says that 80% of the people first shop online for information when it comes to real estate and mortgages.

Blogging can be very therapeutic in so many ways. It can also be a great way to brand yourself online in which I talked about in Part 1 : How to Market yourself in 2008 -- Marketing & Branding -- Part 1 of 3  I am not an expert in blogging as I am in mortgages, but I wanted to share with you what I have learned in the last 16 months because of Active Rain and a few other people that I have networked with. Some of these people are experts in the blogging field.

Now, for an opening introduction. I wanted to quote Mary McKnight who told several of us in a webinar that Active Rain is probably the best place to start blogging and learning how to blog. They have a very easy blogging platform and Google loves them. Also, for some excellent tips and expert advice, please venture over to Mary McKnight's profile and blogs. I am not hear to promote Mary's business, but she certainly knows what she is doing. I have learned so much from Mary.

Now, I will make this statement without pointing fingers. Don't believe or follow every tip that you read on the internet and even read on Active Rain. There are actually members here on AR who would vouch for that statement, because a few of them went down in page rank because they followed someone else's advice.

shortcuts

Do you need to be an expert writer?  No, not at all. Quality content relating to your profession should be your prime focus. Keep in mind that the average daily newspaper is only of 4th to 6th grade reading. Remember Dennis Miller on Monday Football?  You sometimes needed a dictionary and thesaurus with you to understand some of his commentary while watching football. You do not want to lose your reader, nor bore your reader.

  • Your title of your blog :

--  Aren't we always attracted to something that catches our attention? Makes us want to read what is in front of us?  Sure, catchy titles work on AR, if you want 100's of comments. Yes, it's nice, I'll admit that. But the general public searches for you online by certain keywords and not a catchy title. The title to your blog can be extremely important.

--  You need to pay attention to your title, making sure that you put some of your keywords in that title. Active Rain uses your first 4 words of your title to be picked up in its searches. Other sites use 6 to 10, depending on that particular site. Knowing what keywords are searched are extremely important. You want to make both your title and blog keyword rich. And you don't want to use more than 15 words or more than 85 characters in your title.

  • Quality Content :

--  I have heard from some people that they aren't getting much business from their blogs. Concentrate on local content, specific content, and informational content. Keep writing about real estate and/or mortgages. Nobody wants to hear about your new dog that you just got or your new car.

--  I believe in sharing a few things about yourself, making some of your blogs touchy/feely. Showing your personalty. But this will usually show in most things that you write about.  The best advice that I can give?  Content, content, and content. People are looking for not only advice, but information. It all comes down to what you want out of blogging. I talk more about this in here : Free Beer for comments on all blogs posted this weekend!!!  (ignore the title)

--  Key Note : Patience... results don't happen over night. I didn't start to see true results until 10 months later.  Do you want to know about how successful blogging has been for many of us?  Please join this group by Brian Block : Active Rain Block Party

  • Length of your blog :

--  The normal attention span of someone is not much at all. When it comes to blogging, they say between 300 to 650 words is adequate. But you also don't want to leave too much important information out of your blog. I truly think 750 or less is a good barometer when writing. If you find that your blog might be too long, then make it into a short series.  Here is a great tool for counting your words within your blog : Word_Counter Tool   This blog?  915 words.

--  For more on this topic, please read : Do you like them short or long?

  • Duplicate content :

--  Google doesn't really care as much if you copy your own blog and post it on two other sites that you have. They care about spammers. For more information on this, please read : Duplicate content -- Myth or Truth -- What does it all mean when blogging....

Marketing yourself in 2008 series :

Disclaimer :  For those that have said that you can't read my blog because it doesn't fit on one page, it's because I write everything in Firefox, not Internet Explorer.  I like some of the features that Firefox offers. It not only has a built in spell check, but it saves your work if your system crashed or if AR went down.

Some very good points, especially the length suggestions. I see many that are way too long...

Jeff - Great advice to keep us focused.  You can spend a lot of time on your blog, I agree.  Having a plan and a desired outcome is a strategy you must have to make your blog successful.

AL....... thanks, I hope some of these help. I wish I had some of these tips when I first started. But I received 2 e-mails and 1 phone call today, all from blogging.  And these were people in the middle of buying a home. 1 with an offer excepted and the other one putting a bid in. Blogging works..... and keywords with quality content is the biggest advice that I can give. And long blogs?  Define long?  Yes, some are long, but it depends on its content and how it's broken up. Take this one for example. It's almost a 910 words, but it is also broken up some.  thanks for the compliment.

DEBBIE.....  thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I think a weekly plan when it comes to blogging is very important. As I mentioned, content, content, and content.  ;o)   thanks

Jeff, I completely agree it's about quality content.  I'd rather post less and put more into it then just get posts out there.  And I do show a personal side because I've had so many clients tell me when we meet that "they feel they already know me."  Something you're likely to put in your post will click with someone, I find that all the time.  I love your series!

Andrew Lenza is one of the few bloggers that can get away with length. You have to be really entertaining to make a blog long. I agree shorter is better.  I do focus a lot on content and just this week had my first two emails off of AR blogs. Considering I've only been here for a few months, I'm happy with that start.

Good post.

Jeff I must admit, 910 words IS TOO much for me (regardless of how good the content is) it's just toooo much info for on blog post

ELAINE..... ah, you can walk, talk, and chew gum at the same time also?   lol  Thanks for stopping by, even though I need to turn you around and get you to read part 1... lol  Thanks for the thoughts.

CAROLE.....  I see so many posts that are just blah, blah, blah. Especially those that are about mortgages, but aren't more than 5 sentences... the content is bland and if I were the client, I would move on to the next. Shorter from what I have found is not always better. It all comes down to your message. At least this is my opinion. Thanks for the polite compliment.

MELINA..... I haven't read Andrew often, but I will agree, from what I have read. I agree, that is hard to pull off. As Katrina mentioned below, this was too long for her. But you know what, since this was a series, it was hard to cut anything else. Cutting anything else would leave some important info out. But to each their own.

In regards to your start?  That's a great start and much luck to your future success.

KATRINA.... and that is your opinion which I respect. But you sometimes can't break good content up. Even ask the professional bloggers. Besides, you can read this type of blog in 2 sections, making it two blogs. What then becomes the difference?  Other than that some people just can't sit still. That part is a known fact. And leaving some good facts out of a blog like this would have made it average. It all depends on what you want to get out of a blog. If you get a good following, and you wrote shorts posts also, people will tend to read the long ones also. I know this as a fact because I have talked to other AR members and some of my recent clients that read my blogs daily.  It's just a preference that you prefer short or shorter posts.

Question then.... what made you read it then?  Anyone looking at a long blog can usually tell that it is long also. Just my opinion and I am curious in yours.  thanks for your feedback.

Jeff, I tend to vary in length--guess it just depends on what I'm trying to convey in a particular blog post, but I do think that a length of 750 or somewhat less is good.  Now...onto trying to figure out a good name for my blog...need some cookies to think properly.

Fantastic tips Mr. Belonger and a heck of a lot for us all to learn.  Personally, I'm guilty of going 'Dennis Miller' on my blogs at times.  As far as the length, if it's spaced out & laid out well...and the writing style of the author is something I enjoy...I personally don't care.  Then again, from a Marketing Standpoint, we should probably keep it parimonious concise short:-)

Thanks, Jeff. Mary McKnight is a wonderful resource for blogging. You are so right about not all of the SEO advice on AR is accurate. You really need to pay attention to the source. If a tip just sounds too good or off the wall, it probably will hurt your rankings.

another thing to keep in mind is...

blogging may not be right for everyone

GASP!

It's true though, everyone should decide if blogging is a good use of their time, or if they're better off making phone calls or pounding the pavement.

KENT.....   I agree.... I tend to vary in length also. But you will hardly ever see any of my stuff less than 600 words for the most part. I find giving pertinent info that it's hard to give that plus a commentary on this all in one post.

In regards to that name of your next blog...  do you have milk with your cookies?

MARTI.....  thanks for the polite compliments and for following this. I hope I can duplicate part 3.

SUSIE..... thanks for the kind words and wishes. I am glad that I could help some. As I mentioned, I wish some of this was around when I first started.  ;o)

BARBARA..... well, those are some very nice thoughts and compliments. Thank you very much and for the support.

GITA.....  thanks for the comment. But I just want to be on the same page. In my opinion, a catchy title works good here on AR for you to get lots of attention. But you have to think how people search for you on the internet. If you are talking about real estate in city, state but your title says, "buying lovely homes", you won't get that many searches unless they read your blogs currently. Again, this is just my opinion though, but many experts say the same thing.  thanks

JASON S. .....  I agree, at times you do write like that. But then again, it's usually done in blogs that aren't really mortgage or industry related. From what I have seen, when you write off topic, which is still some good writing. Even some of your e-mails makes me pull out that dictionary... lol  But hey, it all comes down to where you write it or say it. I think Dennis Miller killed Monday football for that season. He was over the average person's head.

In regards to length... sure, keeping it short helps.  But something else that I have found out. In my opinion, more people on AR prefer shorter blogs, more so, so they can get through more blogs and get their 25 pts... lol   But I have spoken to a handful of consumers that have been reading my blogs on a daily basis. They say that they will read long blogs if it's packed with good info and or thought. I have learned to write to my readership and not always to AR. ... and thanks for the polite compliments and your feedback.

DAN....  my pleasure and thanks for that compliment.

BRIAN....  I agree, I think so many have been experiencing good success from blogging. Just in the last 6 months, it's honestly been about 70% of my business. That is an incredible push and I look for those numbers to increase. My pleasure in regards to giving a shout out to your group. I will admit, I haven't visited it much, but it certainly gives people, especially the newbies, a place to realize that blogging does work. And thanks for the compliment.

LATONIA..... I am afraid to answer your first question... lol   99.9% of what I write is last minute and off the top of my head. I think out of 450 some blogs, I have only done 1 to 2 drafts. In regards to this one, I just wrote it as I went.  Overall, thank you very much for the kind words and thoughts.... it's much appreciative.

JILL...... yes, I agree that Mary McKnight is a well of knowledge. I should get my butt over there and read her stuff more times than none. But I need 8 days a week and 30 hour days... lol  But I agree, you need to pay attention to the source. When I read something that I am not sure of, I usually ask 2 to 3 different people that are experts in that field. I typically believe in the law of averages when it comes to information...typically... ;o)

ROBERT K. .....  I agree, it's not for everyone...  but you want to know something....  I hated writing when I was growing up.  If you told any of my professors or teachers that I have written over 400 blogs in 1 1/2 years, they would all fall off their seats. Not only do I realize how important blogging is, but that I love helping people with my knowledge or what I have learned. I have done the phone calls and online lead generators... and I hated it. I hated competiting with lows that low balled just to get the deal in the door.

Thanks so much for this, Jeff.  It is extremely helpful to those of us who are new to blogging.  Although you pick up a lot by getting out there and doing it, it really helps to have a concise pointer sitting around to use as a guideline.

(I especially liked your comment "Don't believe or follow every tip that you read on the internet and even read on Active Rain."  Boy is that ever true!  I've already come across a post or three where I said to myself "oh my gosh, I hope people don't believe this!  hahahaha)

MISSY....  yes, she has been a wealth of information... and looking forward to it when you join us for a call. 3 weeks ago, I kept trying to make her webinars that whole week, but something always got in the way. In the last 2 weeks, I just vowed to put it in my calendar and no matter what the distraction, I would stick with it. I have picked up so much just in 1 week. Watch out cyberspace, here comes Jeff Belonger.  ;o)  and yes, as you and I both know, we need to pay attention to who we listen to, it could bite us in the ass butt.  Thanks for the polite compliment.

ROBERT.... definitely, doing what works best for me or for you. All I try to do is give my experience and knowledge... what I have learned, and just pass it along. Never stating that it's the right way and no other way.  ;o)   thanks

HEATHER..... well, welcome to Active Rain and to the blogging world. If you ever have any questions, never hestitate to ask anyone on Active Rain. Many would be willing to help. And you can always e-mail me or call me, that's if I could help. Thanks for stopping by.

KEVIN & MONICA....  thank you very much and I hope it helps some.

RENAE.....  my pleasure and thanks for taking the time in giving me some feedback. I agree, you need to just get out there and do it. Learn as you go...  That's what I basically had to do, with some help here and there. I wish I had a lot of this info when I first started.  And yes, just be careful in what you read. Everything that I wrote about is not true or correct... lol  Seriously, sometimes follow the numbers of people that do the same thing, if it's working.  Thanks for the kind words.

LANRE..... I truly think that you need to write more than half of your stuff about real estate and mortgages. Mary talks about writing 80% related to your industry.  I have been doing this lately, in the last 2 months, and I have seen my results double just this month. Sure, write what I call touchy/feely posts.... but spread them out and in between your industry related topics. Think about it, it makes sense. The average comsumer wants information and content. You would lose me if I wanted mortgage info and your next 3 posts were not related to the mortgage business. I would move on and I find that many feel the same way. Unless it's a consumer that has been reading your stuff for weeks and or months. But if first starting out? You could lose them.  Just my opinion. Thanks for the polite compliment.

JEFF....  what?  You didn't read the disclosure at the bottom? You weren't able to read this unless you deposited $25 into my pay pal account.... lol    Seriously, thanks and my pleasure.
