THE KAHULUI MAUI AIRPORT - OGG
KAHULUI GOOGLE MAP
What can travelers expect when they arrive on Maui? Here's a brief description of the Maui airport located in the town of Kahului.
Kahului Airport is relatively small, and it's located right on the northeast side of town, by the ocean. It was once a single building with a tree growing up in the middle of the baggage claim area. That tree has been cut down, and the airport greatly expanded, but it still retains a friendly character, with a huge central skylight next to the 5 baggage carousels. All the gates funnel into the baggage area.

Our latest addition to mainstream homogeneity is the Starbucks Coffee shop right there by the baggage, where it used to be a dusty corner. You might laugh, but this is HUGE for Kahului Airport. Before Starbucks there was just a hot dog cart.

Newcomers here are called MALAHINI. We met some arriving Canadian visitors today and I forgot to bring leis! We usually like to lei our first time visitors, but this time we spaced it out. K-Mart and Costco are close by and we could have picked up nice fresh flower leis on the way to the airport, if we had remembered. For those lucky visitors who come in a group, they might even get greeted by a pretty smiling woman with an armful of leis. Poor Steve, he had on so many layers of clothing, the first thing he did when he got his bag was to go into the men's room and change into some shorts... can you believe he wore his long underwear on the flight! It was about 80 degrees, which is kind of cool for Kahului.

Once you get your bags just step out to the curb if you're getting picked up, or cross the street to your car. The parking lot is right there across the road from the baggage claim. If you're renting a car you can hop onto one of the rental company vans and go to your car lot a few blocks away. In case you don't already have a reservation, some car companies have their desks out on the curb, walk over and see what's available... Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz and National.
LEAVING THE AIRPORT - At the first traffic light you can go left to Costco, straight or right. Going straight will put you on Dairy Rd, one of the busier streets in Kahului, and the main road going to the south shore, Maalaea Bay, and the west side, basically all the resort areas. Taking the right lane will bring you into Kahului and Wailuku towns, along Ka'ahumanu Avenue.
At the second traffic light you can turn left and head east on the Hana Highway (36) towards Paia and Haiku and eventually Hana. You can stay on Dairy Road (380), passing the Harley Davidson Shop, Home Depot and Lowes on your way to the south or west side, or turn right on the Hana Highway to get to the Maui Mall and Wailuku.
You're now ready to start enjoying your vacation. It won't be long and you'll fall in love with Maui and wonder how you can manage to move to Maui. Believe me, I know... been there done that. When that time comes, please give me a call and together we can decide your plan of action.
