The Inman Wiki had a great article today titled The Guide to Realtor Speak- a guide to real estate cliches and what a consumer's true definition would be. I found the article quite amusing and very true, so of course I had to see what people were saying in my MLS today.  Here are a few that I saw:

  • "State of the art bathrooms"- Does it have a telephone?  TIVO?  Wireless internet?  What is a state of the art bathroom?  Do explain.
  • "This is the house you want."  - Well what if you are wrong?
  • "Low maintenance yard"  - No grass or loads of junipers!
  • "Over 1,500 sq feet of decks" - No yard, built on a steep hill.
  • "Romantic fireplace" - Have you ever seen an unromantic fireplace?  Wait, yes, I have.  It is not particularly romantic when all of the bricks are falling off.
  • "MAKE OFFER" - We are overpriced and I want this listing SOLD
  • "Retro style" - Seriously outdated
  • "Owned by the same family for 58 years" - yikes!
  • "on the quiet side of the street"- Across the street is REALLY noisy
  • "Recently updated for easy living" - As compared to hard living?  Have you ever seen one that says- Not updated, perfectly suited for hard living.
  • "A sign right behind you here reads "Strange Dog". They're not kidding. ....the yellow lab is wayyy too friendly. Strange indeed."  What is stranger, the dog or the comment?

Truth is stranger than fiction.  It is all in the marketing...

And just why do I need state of the art....bathroom?  I get in, use it and get out lol!  And 58 years?  Goodness, I hope they tore down and built back up :) Thanks for the chuckle.

Ginger- There are polar opposites in all things so to one person that 58 year old house with the same owners may mean yikes to some and wow, they must really love their house to another. You just never know what will float their boat! I do use, live your dream life in your dream home! It works!

Ginger, it's always funny to see what some other agents put in the comments.  I saw one this weekend that said "Hurry! Last chance to buy this house" -- and it had been on the market for about 200 days at that point.  My buyer just laughed.

It's funny to see how some people like to "jazz" up their descriptions. They are pretty comical sometimes!

RICHARD- You are welcome.  I had fun looking through finding these comments that make you laugh or shake your head.

KATRINA- :o )

SALLY- Same here.  Still don't get the bathroom thing!

KATERINA-  I do think that phrase works- but perhaps not in ALL homes.  You are right, that everyone has a different take on things- 58 years might mean one thing to some people, something totally different to another.

BRIAN- That is funny. Last chance!  We will have multiple offers this weekend.  Of course, it could be last chance, the bank is taking it back this weekend.

MICHAEL- We can laugh but we are all probably guilty, although I can honestly say I have never used the term "state of the art bathroom".

TOM- Glad you liked it!

JEFF- Thanks.  Check your MLS. I am sure you will find something to make you laugh!

Nice collection Ginger! I look forward to the next installment - I'm like you - I've know I've never used the words "state of the art" in relation to a bathroom... Never!

Had to laugh at some of these. To the defense it is hard to come up with create words sometimes. Another joke is Near Water(having water in basement.(Don't do this)

LARRY- you too!  Let's chat this week (ok, maybe next!!)

DEBBIE- Perhaps you should try it once?

BILL- Tee hee!

BONNER- Thanks for pointing out what not to do, I thought that one was ok :o )It is hard to be creative.  We may laugh, but I am sure we are all guilty of some strange terms at times.

Ginger- you are right, that phrase would not work great for a fixer upper!

"Seller is very motivated."

He lost 45 pounds, quit smoking and has posters of Tony Robbins on the walls.

Good stuff, Ginger. :)

KATERINA- I generally see it used with a fixer upper!!

JOEY- Those sellers with Tony Robbins on the wall are probably going to be nice!!  That could be a good thing!

Ginger, I once said "Abominable Condition" in the headline for an Open House ad and was totally mobbed.  Everyone who came thought it had to be made up!  It wasn't - the place was a total dump!

Ginger... How Funny! I do recognize a number of those. As I tell my buyers, it is the job of the listing agent to get you in the house and sometimes this is the way they do it! One of my favorites is when I see that it is called a "Handy Man Special"
