Zoo Atlanta! As the weather begins to warm from a cool, though not really cold winter...except for those two snowstorms in one week's time Yep, this is the second snowstorm that hit Atlanta on January 19th and lasted about a day. This is my side yard and that is a magnolia tree with snow on it on the lefthand side of the photo. While we all enjoyed the light dusting of snow, the possibility of a recurrence is not likely, and people are emerging en masse to begin enjoying the outdoors. Remember though, just because it is warming up doesn't mean a trip to the Georgia Aquarium or taking in a show at one of Atlanta's many theaters should be forgotten. Both of these still make for a fun afternoon or evening.

One of the many things to do and many things to see in our magnificent city as the weather warms and the daffodils bloom is Atlanta's world class zoo.

The Atlanta zoo has its roots in the bankruptcy of a travelling circus and that circus' abandonment of it animals in March of 1889. Thanks to the generosity of George Valentine Gress, a local businessman, the entire lot of "circus animals" were rescued from starvation and imminent death and given to the city of Atlanta. Post Cards from the Zoo

In 1935 the addition of a private animal menagerie nearly doubled the zoo's number of attractions. Luckily, this addition also came with a substantial grant of money that was used to update and modernize the zoo's enclosures. The zoo grew over the years and with the formation of the Atlanta Zoological Society in the 1970's the zoo gained a fundraising and educational outreach base; it also began to charge admission. Despite this progress, the zoo began to rapidly deteriorate and was deemed among the 10 worst zoo's in the country by Susie Pressman of Parade Magazine in February 1984. Things were so bad that the zoo lost it accreditation and the public demanded its closure. The mayor of Atlanta, Andrew Young, responded to improve conditions and save the zoo. Within a ten year span the zoo did a complete 180.

The impact of a silverback gorilla nicknamed "Willie B" cannot be overlooked. Willie B. Willie B. stood as a symbol of the progress the zoo made from its past to its present. Willie B. tasted freedom outside a cage for the first time at 28 years old. He went on to sire four offspring. The privatization and revamping of the animal exhibits along with the addition of animal clinics to respond to the healthcare needs of the animals helped to propel Zoo Atlanta to its current world class status.

The modern Zoo Atlanta is characterized by its mission statement. Zoo Atlanta is open every day of the year and has extremely reasonable admission rates. I would definitely recommend checking out the Atlanta City PassAtlanta City Pass Zoo Atlanta is located in historic Grant Park, just minutes from downtown and easily accessed via MARTA or private transportation. Be sure to check out Panda Cam 10am-5pm EST!

Wow Rich - I was almost going to say, 'imagine a magnolia with snow on it!', but we do have some varieties of hardy magnolia here, though they don't get snow in leaf.

Your shot is ..pretty ;) I would think you don't get snow that often huh?

ahh, nice story about Willie!

Rich, I wasn't aware that y'all had a zoo too, great story on the history. (If you're taking Nancy, I want to go too!) I keep learning more about Atlanta thanks to you. I love your snowstorm pic, very pretty. We get about the same amount of snow here.

Love this. My area is not big enough for a zoo but I make it to Knoxville's on occasion. Nice info for the locals and relocate-rs.

Deborah - We usually get a couple of light dustings of snow each season; if it sticks to the road at all watch out! as everyone drives with the control of second graders let out for recess. Think running in circles, arms in the air, screaming; just gotta let the crazy out! <<<smile>>> BTW, our magnolias never loose their leaves! Willie died in 2000 at 41 years old of cardio myopathy. HERE is a recollection of his death.

Nancy - I haven't been since the 80's when it was in such bad shape. It is time for another visit.

Debbie - Our wonderful city really does have a lot to offer! You will have to visit and get together an itinerary from my posts...LOL!

Linda - I'm up for a trip to the zoo, and it looks like Nancy and Debbie want to come too. We should go before the heat of the summer though!

Christina - I have been to Knoxville's Zoo a couple of times; once as a kid, once as an adult. I enjoyed it very much, but if I recall correctly, it is quite hilly.

Ok, you think that I am joking.  Actually, this weekend we went to the farm to see Markus's new pony.  My husband, Gorilla, was actually chasing the girls around throwing dry horse manure at them.  This flinging pooh, is right on!  That picture Danny put up is of his brother though.

I have been to the Atlanta zoo with my kids...hmmmm didn't see brande or danny there though... must have been hiding in the bushes when my lil monkeys and me were walking through. Hey I have a gorilla, I should have donated him and left him there!  LOL j/k

Donna - Yes how he would go crazy when he saw commercials featuring food! I am glad he was honored with a life-size bronze sculpture after his death. It is also good to know that he lives on through his offspring! Thanks for reading and commenting!

Wow, memories of beautiful Atlanta - I lived there for a summer, in 1977, we loved Lake Linear (sp) and the Great Southeast Music Hall.  My sister lived there and her girls were beautiful Southern Belles with a lovely drawl as if they we born there.

That craziness happens here in the north also when people think they don't need snow tires, like  Vancouver and Seattle seem to each like to think they're exempt until the snow falls...

some crazy shenanigans here - the animals restless in their cages? hmm?

Danny - Thanks for clearing that up!

Marey - Thank goodness the monkey and gorillas are in outdoor habitats for the most part so if their arm is that good maybe the Braves could sign them up. <<<smile>>>

Virginia - Lake Lanier is very beautiful! With the terrible drought we have been having however, all motorized watercraft are prohibited until the lake levels rise. Click here for a VIDEO from January of this year showing the low lake levels. BTW, there is nothing nicer than a southern accent!

Carole - The Panda Cam is awesome! I watched the cub eating bamboo yesterday!

Deborah - Being cooped up for a long winter is like being in a cage! <<<smile>>>

Hi Rich,

I like this post, heck I like the Zoo.  We have a great zoo in Milwaukee, and of course, the Chicagoland area has Brookfield and Lincoln Park, great places.

But my favorite place is the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.  No chance of monkey splatter there.

Rebecca -Sorry for all the pooh talk! I really enjoy zoos as they can make things you have read about or have seen on TV real. It is great to get the education about such and such animal and it's environment. It is quite another to actually see in person an elephant or orangutan. I really think it drives home what actually could be lost forever because of habitat destruction and/or pollution, etc. The multi-pronged approach that modern zoos and aquariums take is very valuable. Here are the values that Zoo Atlanta adheres to:

  • Stewardship - We take personal responsibility for the animals in our care as well as all the resources we use.
  • Integrity - We are honest, fair, reliable and sincere.  We are trustworthy and value the trust of our community.
  • Collaboration - We maintain an environment of trust, openness, respect and transparency to maximize the creativity and productivity of our organization.
  • Diversity and Individuality - We recruit and support employees and volunteers with diverse perspectives and talents that result in a strong, focused and innovative organization.
  • Commitment to Members and Guests -We create an enriching and welcoming atmosphere for all members and guests. We provide courteous and helpful attention to ensure they have a wonderful experience each time they visit.
