How many times have you found yourself in a situation where someone remembers you...and you can't remember their name? Crazy as it seems, details like remembering names will truly help you stand out from your competition...and help THEM remember YOU.
I've always been a stickler for remembering names because mine is so simple...Mark Boyd. You can forget my name just as quickly as you can say it.
I don't have one of the cool names like Mario, Jonas, Lleyton, Xavier or anything uncontrollably memorable like that, so my obsessive-compulsive tendencies manifest themselves through trying REALLY hard to remember peoples' names. I found an article this morning that lists 7 tips for remembering names and faces written by Tony Dottino, management consultant and chairman for the USA Memory Championship. It lists some of the things that have traditionally worked for me and I hope it helps you, too.
Tips for Remembering Names and Faces:
1. When meeting someone, focus on what you’re going to learn about that person, not on what you are going to say.
2. When you hear the person’s name, try to repeat it or ask about its spelling.
3. Ask for a business card or write the name down immediately after leaving the person. The more senses you engage–hearing, saying and seeing the name–the more likely you will be to remember.
4. Learn at least four things about the person, such as what the person does for a living and where the person lives. . The more you know about the person, the easier it will be to recall him or her.
5. As you say goodbye, repeat the person’s name.
6. Pretend you have to introduce this person to a friend and swiftly review the information you’ve gathered.
7. Make remembering a game. The more you stress over it, the less you’ll remember.
