Negative Keywords for Real Estate PPC

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Buzz Marketing Pros

That's negatory good buddyIf you are using Pay per Click (PPC) advertising, you should be using negative keywords in your campaigns and/or Ad Groups. Negative keywords are words and phrases that, when used in a search, you don't want your ads to show up for.

When you add negative keywords to your PPC campaigns your ads will not be served if those words are part of the user’s search query.

These words will not only benefit you by saving money on wasted clicks, they will also improve the click through rate (CTR) of your keywords/ads, and a higher CTR can decrease the cost of your ads.

You may not want to include all of these words as negatives, depending upon your goals, but most of them will apply to your real estate business.

excellent, EXCELLENT tips!

I learned early on that I was PAYING for clicks that certainly would never buy or sell house with me.  People looking for loan calculators, school info, etc.  So I just cut way back on my PPC advertising.

These tips will help me to get back in the game without hemorrhaging money.  THANK YOU!

Nice list of negative keywords. Correctly using negative keywords is critical to the success of a keyword campaign and most overlook it.

I would be careful about including "review" and "reviews" as negative keywords in case people are searching for reviews of homes and "chart" may inadvertently cause ads not to show up for those looking for charts on real estate.

Great list and thanks for posting on pay per click (one of my favorite subjects).

Hi Kay- I am not sure I agree with your analysis. Negative keywords are a valid part of any successful PPC campaign. The key is to not to over use them. Google Adwords Help Center explains it best.

Best wishes!

Do negative keywords only impact PPC? I noticed them looking at adword help on Google. They really do not impact natural search engine keywords?

Joseph - good point about review and reviews. I'm posting another article on PPC keyword selection on SEO Diva in a few minutes.

IMNJ - there are two different types of uses for negative keywords. You may want to read my new Diva article.

Richard - the reason there's concern with them in PPC is because they cost money every time an ad shows up for one and it's clicked on. They can be used for natural search to your advantage.

Interesting article. I started watching the keywords that were generating visits and took corrective action with negative words that eliminated what I considered searchers that I wasn't interested in. It definately saved me money and improved my bounce rate.

Great list...this can literally save you hundreds of dollars alone. I am about a month into adwords and this list is great. For folks new to adwords...you should also look at the list of search terms that were used for your ad.....this way you can see exactly what people typed in their google search and add it to your negative keywords if you don't want your ads to show up under those search words or phrases. Thanks :)

Negative keywords must be implemented first before making your campaign live. When you do keyword research, easily you can find negative keywords related to your business. Above negative keywords are very common. Use specific and generic negative keywords. I spent many years in PPC campaign management and this is my first task when setup campaign.
