Have you ever wanted to be distinguished as the key person in you market? Have you ever thought about branding your name or your business? Well that's what most of us are doing on and off line. Our distinction in our profession is what sets us apart in the minds of those who would consider our services in their time of need.

Getting "mind market share" is so important because people have so many choices when it comes to deciding to use one person over another. Some call it luck or being in the right place at the right time. I call it having "mind market share." For me it's about being in the minds of the people who have a need for my service but not just yet. People make up their minds to buy when they want to or need to and not before. Nobody really wants to be sold. What we really like is buying on our own terms.

Think about it for a moment. When you look to buy, what's the first thing you do? If you're like most people, you start thinking about who do I know who offers this...? You've probably heard this statement, "people buy from people they know, like and trust." We first know people in our mind. Here's that mind market share thing again. We might have an emotional connection or an intellectual connection. In either case the mind begins to recall the names of people or their function or something about them that causes us to want to do business with them.

I'm no psychologist but I have tracked people for years and many of my clients have told me that they thought of me in a fleeting moment just as they were in need of the service I offer. Now keep in mind they were not my clients at the time they thought of me. They were merely potential prospects who I had developed "mind market share" with.

The question is do you have the mind market share of your prospects?

Good points.  You have to think like your clients and don't insult them by trying to push or sell them.

Good post, Cedric. Branding is so important - especially for real estate agents.  You need to brand what your speciality area is so that, when people think about that specific niche that you focus on, they'll think of you!

Renae, you're so right, branding is absolutely important.  Otherwise we're just another name in a sea of names.

Matthew, I sure can relate to not insulting or pushing our clients.  It might work in the short term but it will definitely come back to bite you.
