This is a continuation of the Wednesday Series: Can [this] sell houses? Read the previous 2 posts here:

I recently spent 2 weeks at home in Taiwan for Taiwanese New Year (Gong Si Fa Tsai to everyone!) and it’s always interesting to go back because the values of both California and Taiwan differ a lot.

There is no staging in Taiwan except for model homes. Agents show homes vacant or cluttered and people are used to it (The houses are tiny there, we all live very cluttered lives). Homes are a lot smaller and storage is always a hot topic in Asian homes. Feng Shui is also big, not only for people who are alive and also with people who are dead. People often jokes that it’s more expensive to live in Taiwan as a dead person than a live one since feng shui is a key ingredient in selecting an appropriate plot for every individual.

Feng Shui, fad or true?

Feng Shui has always been sort of trendy. Feng Shui has become a trendy thing to hear about in the staging field. As I progress in the industry, I often encounter people who are on both sides. There are even publications on feng shui for cats, it’s really difficult to take something like so seriously. Some believe in staging with feng shui, some think it’s a sign of desperation.

But does feng shui really sell houses?

5 Comments on Feng Shui — Crazy Cults or Sells Houses?

Hi Cindy... I read the rest of this posting on your other webblog. Interesting! Feng Shui, of course, has always been a part of the Chinese culture. I personally think that Chinese people are spiritually awared beyond the Western concept of religions. Here in New York, for example, Chinese people may go to a Christian church, and still believe in Feng Shui, at the same time. You won't find the Feng Shui in the Bible, I suspect.

I am working with a couple of young Chinese who wants to buy a two-family home. It's challenging at best to work with them because, besides the price, location and usually considerations, they won't want a tree or hydrant in front of the house.. and god knows what other objections they may come up with in the name of Feng Shui. Oh well.... if they are spending close to $1M to invest in a property, I guess they do have every right to find their perfect buy. No complaints.

Steve

I don't know... I think there may be a few mentions of putting the rocks on west side for good fortunes. haha

I have to say though, modern homes don't typically fit the feng shui elements. But then again, I wouldn't want a hydrant in front of my house either, what if there is a fire? Plus I won't be able to park in front of my house ;) I think you have a great attitude about it and your clients will love you for it. They know they are difficult and I am sure they feel bad too.

Cheers,

Cindy

Hi Cindy,

I love the study of feng shui, but thought it went too far when I heard that there was a McDonald's that was feng shui'd. Too much!

My biggest challenge with feng shui and buyers has been what is seen from the front door. Once I found a great home but it had a view of a church (had it been only a wedding chapel, it would have been fine, but since funerals also happened at that church, it was a problem). Another great home was located on a road past a cemetery - apparently also a no-can-do.

Great post :)

Carole Provenzale's blog is my primary source for Feng Shui information. There is no doubt she is a true believer.

HI Cindy! Rosaio's right, I am a true believer. I've been doing this too long and have seen too many things change in a client's life to ever doubt it. I believe that people have too many misconceptions about Feng Shui and are confused by all the different methods of practice. They all seek to provide peace, harmony, health and abundance in all areas. That's a good thing anywhere! BTW, it was lovely speaking with you!
