Jedediah Smith State Park pictures

Jedediah Smith State Park, Fran Gatti blogThis is a picture taken of me on the Hiouchi trail in Jedediah Smith State Park.  There are several trailheads where this hike begins.  If you are heading north on Highway 199 from Crescent City, pull into the turn-out on the right side of the road before the Hiouchi Bridge.

This hike gives you spectacular views of the Redwoods, the Smith River, many varieties of flora and fauna, and in the spring, spectacular rhododendrons and azaleas in bloom.  Approximately a half mile into the hike, there is a bench overlooking the river where we stood to take the picture below and rest a bit.

The Hiouchi Trail hike is for a novice to average hiker (that's what I am).  We hiked in about an hour and then back out one afternoon after work.

There are trailheads similar to this one all over the 199 corridor between Crescent City and Hiouchi, the little town that is home to Jedediah Smith State Park.

If you haven't been to the Smith River to fish, swim, kayak, canoe, or raft, you are missing out.  The Smith River is the only undammed river in Northern California and is a recreation lover's delight.

Cynthia and Jason,

I hope you are able to make it here one day.  Del Norte County is a beautiful little place God set aside here in the Redwoods.

Thanks for your kind words,

Fran

Hope Real Estate is okay. We moved back to north Oregon and break even renting our Applegate Valley home to cover the bulk of our mortgate.

The redwoods is the part I miss most about living in south Oregon. Jed Smith redwoods was just 2 hours away. I seem to get down in the redwoods every 2 months though - now.

April 15 or 16 is my next likely redwood vistit.

Hoping for a bit of sun - but rain is fine. Fog is wonderful.

Cheers,
