Leaping Frogs

Leap Year -- that once-every-four-years phenomenon in which February, the red-headed stepchild of the calendar, gets to be almost as long as its cohorts.

No, Leap Years were not just invented to confuse us and make us write March 1 on our checks a day early. It's not the universe's version of April Fool's Day (because then it would occur in April, wouldn't it?)

Leap Years actually exist to keep our calendar working properly, to keep it lined up with the solar calendar. And believe it or not, that extra day every four years (or a quarter day per year) really add up! In fact, over a one hundred year period, for example, the difference between the solar year and the calendar year would become 25 days! So instead of summer vacation starting in June, it would actually start in July. No way -- that's way too late for me!

It's actually not that simple, but that's it in a nutshell. For a more precise, scientific explanation, you can click here

Maura, how fun! Love the frog animation as well. Leap year is such a bizzare thing to me and it's been throwing me off all month. "oh yeah, we DO have an extra day this month, I forgot!"

Hi, Kim! Thanks for reading! I truly did not know why we have leap years. I'm sure they covered it in school, but that information did not stick with me!

Hi, Jo! I saw a girl on the TODAY show the other day who had a leap year birthday. She said she was turning 4! (Of course, she was turning 28!) =)

Hi, Colleen! Thank you! I thought the frogs were very cute, as well!

I wonder why "leap" was chosen and not hop, jump, skip or something else?
