I am a workaholic!

I admit it. I love to get things done and make money.

I'm addicted to bringing new ideas to my clients and business partners.

It's nothing to me to work 12-14 hr days for weeks on end if I'm into a project or building a new website or marketing.

But

I've learned recently that I have to balance myself out.

That I CAN'T neglect family and friends because time is slipping and with that relationships can too.

I'm wondering, what some other Active Rain members do to really stay on track, schedule and balance their lives and fight their workaholicism.

Go to church?
Spend more time with family?
Read a book?
Vacation?

What helps you keep focused, and say its time to go home, get up now you don't need to finish this tonight.

Just curious....Thanks!

Ken,

I schedule EVERYTHING. Including family time, work and everything in between. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. You certainly won't be on your death bed wishing you'd spent more time working. Make the time for your family and friends. You'll be glad you did.

Cheers,

David Swierczynski

I am a classic one myself.  It has taken several years to know when I am pushing too hard.  I don't have kids, but I have a fantastic husband, unfortunately I have found when I am working hard, he will do the same, our balance has had to be forced.  I now set aside one day a week that is different each week do to clients coming in, I block out the day and make it a point to only check my emails once in the morning and once at night.  I am by far not perfect with it yet and the hours still get long, but I am getting better.

Ken - I am a Type-A Workaholic who developed stomach ulcers at 16.  Over the years, I have found that there are two types of people in the working world, particularly on the commission-able side:  There are those whose for whom work gets in the way of their lives (skip lunch, work late, miss dinner, no vacation this year), and those for whom life gets in the way of their work (My cat was sick. I had to get my oil changed, I had a fight with my wife.)  Such events occur in all of our lives, some are just able to compartmentalize and juggle a little bit better.

I will say, though, that having children does change things.  I have found that one can still be a bona-fide workaholic but spend at least a little time each day with my children.  That is what gets me out of here at 7:00 instead of 8:00 each night - I know I can see my son and daughter for a little while.  That is also what is getting me down to Florida next week (my first vacation in 2 years).  Not only do I need to recharge my batteries, but I want to spend time with my wife and children.

Ken I work from home, so I may interrupt personal with work or vice versa. But I end up having a long day usually.

Then there are the days when I have appointments and I must fit in time for my kids (15 and 13). Although they don't need constant attention, I do try to talk to them periodically. 8-) Better yet they may ask me to play a game or go out and throw a ball. Whatever. I know I need to take more time to do that.

Regarding friends and personal time, i usually schedule. But then you sometimes just have to go with the flow. I finished all my laundry today. That was a big accomplishment!
