Living in Denver - Day Trip to Colorado Springs

One of the best parts about living in Colorado is that you will never run out of new places to visit - and generally speaking - you can find somewhere great to go in under 2 hours - many under 1!

Colorado Springs from Setrich Ice ARena

One of our family's favorite places to visit is Colorado Springs.  We were there quite recently for my son's hockey game at the Sertich Ice Arena - so even though we did not have a ton of free time, we were lucky to have beautiful weather and had some time to enjoy the day and stayed for a nice lunch as well.

If you are visiting Colorado Spring and looking for ideas - here are some of our favorites.

Downtown Colorado Springs

  • Cheyenne Mountain Zoo - This zoo is really fun- and has become a must-visit for Denverites.  The first time we went my kids were still little, so we took the trolley to the top (the zoo is quite hilly - its name does contain the word mountain after all), walked down one side of the zoo and then took the trolley to the top again, and descended the other side.  My kids favorite - feeding the giraffes (with the food they provide).

  • Strolling Downtown for shopping & lunch/dinner - Downtown Colorado springs is very walking friendly and really is a very nice place to just stroll around.

  • Seven Falls Take either the elevator or the 200+ stairs to the top to get a magnificent view of the falls.  There are also hiking trails at the top.

Garden of the Gods exit of I25

  • Garden of The Gods - One of our personal favorite, pack a picnic and be ready to explore.  The natural beauty here will astound you.

  • Cave of The Winds - This is truly awesome to descend in the cave and see all of the natural beauty inside. We will be returning here.

  • The Broadmoor Hotel - Whether you decide to stay (check their website for some serious weekend specials from time to time) - The Broadmoor is classy & elegant but fun to boot ad has numerous delicious dining options.  This will likely be a splurge, but its worth it.  And this summer - don't miss the Senior Mens PGA Tour at The Broadmoor - what an event that will be!

  • Hockey Game at Colorado College - In a few short weeks the NCAA western semi finals Championship  will be in Colorado Springs at World Arena.  I am not sure if there are still tickets but its worth a look.

  • United States Olympic Complex - Olympic Skating Center - World Figure Skating Museum

Pikes Peak

  • Pikes Peak & The Cog Railway - The majestic mountain that can be seen for miles is a fun event whether you go up in a car or by train - The Cog Railway.  Be aware that the altitude rise can be daunting for some.

  • Camping - Hiking - Fishing - Biking - outdoor activities abound in Colorado Springs and the nearby area.  If you are an outdoor enthusiast, you will not be disappointed.

  • North Pole - Santa's Workshop - nestled along the mountains, this is the perfect amusement park for little ones.  Small in size both in size of rides and size of the park  it is a great experience for those with young ones.  And of course you'll get to see the big guy - Santa himself!

  • USAFUnited States  Air Force Academy -  Quite the site - it is not unusual to see Air Force jets flying alongside I25 as you approach Colorado Springs practicing maneuvers.  I highly suggest making time to visit the Air Force Academy.

These are just a few of the highlights you could enjoy on a day trip (or a weekend) in Colorado Springs.  Be sure to check out the Colorado Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau web site for plenty of other ideas for you.

Steve, I wish we had made more trips to Colorado Springs when we lived there.  Since we lived on the north side of Denver we just didn't head that direction when we took our day trips.  Now that my sister is living in Elizabeth I can see us heading that way when we come to visit though.  You gave a very good list of things to see.  I have been to about half of them.
