You betcha!  Ever since our very own Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup in the 2005-2006 season beating Hockey Stanley Cupthe Edmonton Oilers it has been Hurricane fever here in the Triangle.  Most of you know I'm a tennis player and a runner so I haven't really spent a lot of time writing about our Hurricanes.  I have had several families relocating to the area that didn't even know that the Hurricanes play out of Raleigh!! It's time to get the word out and give our wonderful team some credit.

So, how did the Hurricanes end up in the Triangle anyway?  Originally the Hurricanes hometown was in Hartford, Connecticut and the team was known as the Hartford Whalers.  In 1998 the team moved to Raleigh.  The team progressed with the leadership of the infomous Ron Francis, now retired.

In order for me to tell you about how wonderful the Hurricanes are I relied on a great asset in my office - Our receptionist/secretary Nancy Heintz.  If I want to know about the latest and greatest related to the Hurricanes I rely on Nancy. That said, I learned quite a bit from my interview with Nancy today.

Hurricanes Win Stanley CupIf you want to know anything going on with the Hurricanes turn to the Canes Connection for your source of real time information.  The link to the connection can be found here. You can even get on their list to get updates from the Team.

I learned a lot from Nancy about Hockey today and forgive me if this is rudementary for you.  I understand other sports in great depth but am intrigued about learning about new adventures.  The bottom line - The Canes are Winning & Winning Big.

Come on - They are in 1st place in their division and currently have a spot in this seasons playoffs. However, the division is tight. Washington Capitals are on the Canes heels w/only 5 points behind them. And the worst part- they have 2 more games to catch up to the Hurricanes.  The bottom line - It's so tight between the top 5 teams it could be down to the last game.  What great drama is that and all here in the Triangle!!!

So, where to I find the actual standings? Go here for the latest and greatest. Justin Williams of the Carolina Hurricanes

How do the Divisions work?

There are 3 Separate Divisions that make up the Eastern Division with a total of 15 teams.  And, 3 Separate Divisions w/15 teams making up the Western Division.   Just for the record - RBC Center is the loudest arena in Hockey and we like to party.  The Hurricanes are big for tailgating.

More updates regarding insider info from my team guru Nancy:

  • Justin Williams has been out with an injury - could be back earlier.
  • Rod Brind'Amour,  team Captain, will be out the rest of the season w/an injury
  • Stillman & Commander (red hed) traded for two players from Ottawa.
  • 2 players from chicago are playing well.  Lots of injuries - brought up players from farm team in Albany, New York.
  • Ray Wittney went off the ice last night - could be reinjured.

Don't get me wrong - I love to watch the Hurricanes play at the RBC Center.  It's a bit cold so I try to wear lots of warm clothes.  Hopefully, someday, I will have the passion that my dear secretary Nancy has at the office.

Tracy--The North St. Paul Snowman was painted with a Hurricane logo as one of the team players...sorry I don't remember which one...went to North St Paul High School. It was a big event as he brought the Stanley Cup to North St. Paul. They even had a parade...Hockey is big in MN. Your friend Nancy would be in good company as Minnesotans love their Wild Hockey too!

Tracy, growing up in Boston I have been to my share of Hockey games, PRO, College & High School. High School hockey was huge and many a Friday night was spent at the rink. It's a very exciting sport! You ar e right about the cold... We didn't notice it as much in New england since it was so much warmer than outside! LOL!

Tracy, it's sort of funny thinking about professional hockey, let alone Stanley Cup hockey, south of, oh I dunno - Boston?  I think about playing on a frozen pond or something!

Patricia - Look at it this way  - This is a BIG issue for the Triangle - being able to start w/college sports, acedemia, and be able to add professional sports.  If only everyone could sell from where they are coming from.

Thank you, Patricia for your great and funny comments.  You are the best.

Teri - I hope you thaw out soon.  What a tough market.

Ginger - When we finally spoke on the phone I realized your heritage.  My hubby is from Australia and he also has  a distinct heritage.   I'm planning on going to Wilmington next Wed. w/my daughter. Are you available for lunch?

Hockey is a good game.  Better in person than on your tv.

I still can't believe that North Carolina has a team, yet Washington and Oregon do not.  We do have some great minor league hockey though.

Beyond having a good team - we are very competitive - we had a great team in 1st place and formerly won the Stanley Cup.  You can't get better than that!!

I was born and raised in NC, so I barely even knew what hockey was until the Hurricanes came here. Now, I'm hooked! What an exciting sport -- I can't believe what I was missing out on all those years!  Go 'Canes!!!

Tracy... it's amazing.... the Flyers haven't won in ages... more than ages... and the Hurrican's come into the league and win.  And even Rod Brind'Amour won one, after leaving Philadelphia.  The Flyers right now are fighting for the 8th and last spot for the playoffs.....

Times are changing and so is the coaching at the Hurricanes. Our old coach is back!  We'll see how that goes.
