wrought iron

Finding artwork to enhance Staged homes is always a fun challenge for me.  It is surprising how professional non-traditional items can look once they are matted and framed, here are some of my favorites:

  •  Maps- I got this idea from a Pottery Barn catalogue.
  •  Greeting cards
  • Photos you've taken- especially in black and white

Your own original work- I own this but I didn't paint it, the artist is my friend Emily Tanaka.

The back of a ROOM SERVICE MENU! This will look great once matted and framed.

One of the things I like to do is frame scrapbooking paper.   I do not have pictures, but I did run out in the middle of a staging once because I lacked adequate artwork for a girls room.  I found some 10x13 frames with mats cropped to 4x6.  They were at Michaels and I could not find any prints to compliment the bedding, so I headed to the paper section and found 3 coordinating prints.  They looked great, but I did not get any close ups. I will have to do that...

I have also purchased blank canvases and acrylic paints and created my own.  I'm no pro, but I can coordinated colors.

One idea for a kid's room is to purchase some shadowboxes and place an old toy or figurine (e.g., GI Joe, My Little Pony) in it, then hang on wall.  So long as the toy is in good condition, not only does it look cute, it can also evoke fond memories in buyers' minds!

Another idea is to get some discontinued wallpaper books from your local decorating store or sometimes even a sample will do.  Carfefully cut the paper into the desired size, frame it and voila - instant artwork!!

Judy, framed fabric is a really great idea, you wouldn't need much and could even find great remnants, I love this.

Kimberly W., I have used the scrapbooking paper too!  Toile wrapping paper and decorative office supplies, (I used a striped manila folder) also work.

Ann, I love the shadow box idea- you could put anything you needed-  Great idea!

Kimberly U., using wallpaper would give you endless decorative options and by getting the discounted books I imagine it is cheap and we are recycling- great thinking!

When we were in need of a large piece to hang, we used the canvas stretchers at Michaels to make the size frame we needed.  Then we used a fabric remanant to cover it, stapled the fabric to the back of the stretchers & poof.  Lightweight, inexpensive & easy.  We are doing a house soon that is a pretty tight budget (whose isn't LOL) and I think we might make a headboard using 2 canvases like this.

Old calendars.! ... I buy 'bad art" in good frames for really cheap..  open them up,  replace the bad images with the ones I have from the calendars..  I don't really want to accumulate too much BIG art as I worry about damage.. rather I am building a collection of framed work that is more like 16" to 18" long and wide.. then I have more flexibility and can group them together for impact if needed.

I LOVE the headboard idea !!!

Here's another one from a catalog (thanks, Pottery Barn): hang pretty or rustic bells in shadow boxes. I think a set at PB cost about $99 or something ridiculous...but you can make them for just the cost of an old bell and a frame!

I am bringing myself to go to our local "junk shop" here in my little town.  Ive been there once & sneezed my way thru it (feet of dust).  In betwern ACHOO's I did see some cool stuff that might be able to be made into some kind of art work. Art has always been my nemesis and it causes me stress!!  But since it "makes" the room I have to dig deep in the creative department.  I have this enormous teal blue (yes kids, teal) wall that needs something in 4 days & I am clueless what to do that wont look lost..... and so the dilemma continues.

Ann, Pottery Barn is a great resource for ideas. They are too expensive as a regular source for Staging but they provide lots of inspiration.

Patricia, very glad to have you here, you are among friends!

Karen, I love the local junk shops.  Teal- please send a picture!  Try wrought iron or wood pieces, they go w/everything.

Karen:  Try a big piece of fabric hung some coool way...ANYTHING to cover the teal?  No I like teal.  Here's a bathroom pic that was the most horrible 1976 Harvest Gold.  After, "It looks like a

magazine,"the buyer said.

Another idea is to get big canvases and mix up some finishing plaster and water to pancake batter consistency and sculpt something abstract on the canvases.  Don't go TOO heavy as it might try to fall off when hung.  Then paint it, maybe even spray paint it.  Whatever you do, do post pics, pleeeease.  Wish I were there to help.  If I don't get a job soon, I'm gonna blog myself into a stupor.

Oh! Another idea.  How about a jungle of sticks as a pic for the wall...OK nevermind.  Told you I was tired.

The simplest thing ever for kids rooms is to buy prestretched canvas - the cheapest you can find - paint it a bold color and add some of the wall color in a stripe or polka dots. It looks especially cool in a set of three or four.  You can cover the edges - if necessary - with ribbon and hot glue. It is technically art and you do not have to be an artist to do it. Well, it is kind of a Monet thing - pretty from afar, but will anyone look upclose?

Some other things you can toss up there - Kites, badminton rackets, cds (really cool for teen rooms), framed screen printed tshirts and postcards hung like a clothesine (see photo)

Kim that is SO cute!  Did you hang it up with pushpins or something?  Kids rooms are so much fun :)  I have 3 daughters and my partner has 3 sons so when we went shopping the other day we just automatically split up and she hit the boy section & I did the girls LOL.  I would have no idea what to do in a boys room LOL.  But now we are set with 2 "packages" and thats one less thing to do (besides the art part).

I hung those with two pink "bubble" pushpins.  The tiny pushpins came from Ikea.  I have girls, too.  The boys section of the toy store gives me a headache. (I always give my nephews books - thank goodnes they both love to read)  Anyway, I did the same in a boys room - I just used jute and regular green pushpins and postcards with alligators  and painted some small clothespins green.  I don't have a photo, though.  I bought all of the postcards at Goodwill and paid .26 for a set of four.  SO inexpensive!

Patricia, I've never heard of it. Thanks for the link. I looked it up and it's an easy way to search for what your looking for.  It would probably be more cost effective to just order the print and then have it framed locally or mount it  onto canvas.  I may try this out.  Let us know if you order anything.
