Hayward Mayor Briefs REALTORS®:  On Wednesday (2/27) Hayward Mayor Michael Sweeney updated the Central County Marketing Meeting on the latest in Hayward.  Among the challenges Mayor Sweeney discussed were the performance of Hayward schools and public safety.  While the City of Hayward doesn't have direct jurisdicition over the Hayward Unified School District, Mayor Sweeney promised to continue his highly visible and vocal concerns about school performance.  He noted that the schools now have "closed" campus policies which helps keep students on campus, and out of trouble, for the entire school day.

Mayor Sweeney also highlighted positive changes taking place in downtown Hayward including the construction of a new movie theatre which will anchor an entertainment-themed retail and dining development at the corner of B Street and Foothill.

This is Michael Sweeney's second round as Mayor of Hayward.  He first served on the Hayward City Council and as Mayor in the 1980s.  Several veteran REALTORS® who knew and worked with the Mayor during his first stint in City Hall were impressed by how he has evolved as a civic leader and his frank answers to pointed questions about community issues.

REALTOR® Impact:  Public safety and school quality have a direct impact on property values.  Mayor Sweeney's interest and initiatives to improve school performance could increase Hayward property values.

Next Steps:  Asked how REALTORS® could help him lead the City of Hayward Mayor Sweeney said we should speak up about community issues and share our perspective on what the City should be doing.  Following the meeting, several REALTORS® approached me with ideas on boosting the image of the city and the Hayward Unified School District.  Based on this feedback we'll work with the local media on some creative story ideas that highlight the positive aspects of the city.
