Deborah Pearce and I have one thing in common--our LOVE of ART. We are both particularly facinated and in awe of Vincent Van Gogh and her recent post reminded me I have a few pictures I can show her of my visit to the little province Van Gogh spent the last years of his life, Auvers-sur-Oise. You can read Deborah's post here: Vincent Van Gogh * Sunflowers at Arles * Almond Blossoms at Saint Remy
Since my visit there in August, they have moved many of his artwork to a new museum they were creating while I was there. They did not allow us to take pictures of the tiny room where he spent his last years. For many years, Starry Night was in MOMA, The Museum of Modern Art in New York City and I could stare at it for an hour....I wonder if they've moved that to the museum as well.
Please excuse the quality of my pictures. Theoretically, this lovely little province is not far from Paris. In reality it took about five hours to get there. And while expecting it to be somewhat warm in Paris in August, I was in for a bit of a surprise. On the few days it didn't rain we'd hit a cold spell...I don't believe it hit more then 40 degrees any day we were there.
I always wonder how someone who was considered "mad" could be such a genius and produce such incredible work. Without the life long support of his brother, Theo, I wonder if he would have gotten to create so much beauty. Here, Deb, a bit of Paris:
A picture I snapped of the colorful and beautiful town of Auvers-sur-Oise.
Vincent as a young man in his 20's. This is directly opposite the staircase to the one VERY TINY room that we could not go in or take pictures of.
The Church At Auvers--through Vincent's eyes.
And through the camera's eyes.
The guide books warned of a VERY steep walk up to the gravesite. I'm happy to say that after about an hour I reached the top--and it was no where to be seen. We climbed back down with some other people we had met who were also looking for it and saw some people to ask when we arrived back at the museum. We'd had it right--it was up there and we had ALL missed it :( And yes, I went BACK up!
Vincent's brother, Theo died a short time later and his wife allowed him to be buried next to his beloved brother. There were small memories there, pictures people had drawn and notes.
