This is another film from director of whimsy Michel Gondry. He also did Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as well as the more recent Science of Sleep. The latter is online in it's entirety. Have fun accessing that wacky movie here.
For the more user-friendly Be Kind Rewind, Gondry lands Jack Black, Mos Def, Danny Glover and even a cameo from Sigourney Weaver. The concept is unique and the setup is ripe for comic harvest. While trying to sabotage a power plant, Jack black becomes magnetized. When he visits a local video store owned by Danny glover, and managed by Mos Def, his mere presence destroys all the video tapes. To save the store, Black and Def have to remake all the movies, including Ghostbusters, Robocop and Driving Miss Daisy. But I have a feeling that to pack the theaters the way a Jack Black movie typically does, the movie's marketer are going to have to be a little bit disingenuous. The trailer will be full of hilarious slapstick and Black flapping about, but this movie is much less of a comedy and much more of a seemingly scriptless YouTube video. But like a popular YouTube video, one that you watch because it has four-and-a-half stars and comments raving of it's quality, you'll stay not just because it has a few shining brilliant moments, but also because the people in it are having fun. Be Kind exudes a youthful enthusiasm. It also speaks to an age-old lament: has everything been done already?
Beware: I think I just explained this.
Who Will Like This: Film students, young people trying desperately to show they're smarter than we think they are, and anyone eschewing plausibility and conformity for a little bit of originality.
Secret to Better Enjoyment: Watching the YouTube phenomena of remakes of "Be Kind Rewind".
Right now there's a real, live person waiting to answer your call at MyREALTY Mortgage. (or at least I hope so or I'll look like a total dumbass)
That sounds funny, I'll have to check it out. I'm not "young", not a film student... I guess I must fit the 3rd category. : ) I always enjoy Jack Black anyway.
