Le PapagayoI visited one of my fave restaurants in the Carlsbad area last night, Le Papagayo, in Leucadia (Encinitas) and heard a terrific Cuban band for the first time.

(you can listen to some music here)

I love this band…and I think you will too, if you like the sound of traditional Cuban music, vocal harmonies, the pulse of congas and timbales (not the food, silly), and the melodies of the spanish guitar.

Le Papagayo in Leucadia

Playing to a full house at the very popular Le Papagayo, this band is clearly a crowd favorite, and it’s easy to see why. The sounds of traditional Cuban music seem to go so well with the funky, eclectic beach life in this area of Encinitas, and with terrific Cuban specialties to nosh on while enjoying the live entertainment (as well as a diverse menu of other great eating) it was a great evening out.

The only thing that could be better would be in the summer with all the doors and windows open.

This band plays at Le Papagayo on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month (Thursdays are Cuban night, but live music happens 6 days a week – blues, jazz, latin, soft rock, etc.). Stop by to hear them, or visit some other night for the terrific food.

Jeff:Le Papagayo sounds like a blast. Cuban food is very tasty and full of anti oxidants! Mue bueno! Listening to Cuban music can be intoxicating. I learned years ago how to make grilled Cuban sandwiches loncherias with their original flat bread. Bell Green pepper, tomatoes, red pepper, ham, roast pork, melted cheeses, pickles....just delicious!

Jeff,

Nice little set up...as you know we have many places like that over here in FL. I could go for a Cuban Steak Sandwich right now!

Marlene - have not seen that on the menu, but their flan with aged rum is to die for. :) And they have a great breakfast/brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.

Monika - next visit when they play I will have my camera - a video would have been fun. Can't share the food though, which is too bad. They have a crabcake and ahi tuna appetizer that is killer.

Renee - LOL. I am thinking about it. I had a pretty negative comment about it so decided to make a change. But maybe that was a mistake. Given I am at the beach in a big surfing area, the pic seems appropriate.

So when you come to visit I'll treat!

This place sounds like it's a great place. Thanks for posting. I didn't think of finding a Cuban fun place in California. My mistake.

Maria - well it is not exclusively Cuban, but the Cuban night on Thursdays and this terrific band are really a treat. Their CD is excellent. And there are a few Cuban restaurnants in the area as well.

Jeff - My wife introduced me to Cuban food 44 years ago. She was born and raised in Key West, Florida and grew up on Cuban food. Use to spend some time in Cuba before Castro. Her family goes way back in that area. Her grandfather use to have the ferry boat that ran from Key West to Cuba. She just came in and said he wished she had a good Cuban sandwich but it would never compare to the Cuban bread her great grandmother use to make. She just read your blog. She said her parents use to go dancing every Saturday night at the Cuban Club in Key West. Now she is all excited and is going to her computer to pull up Key West and the Key West citizen newpaper to read up on the news.

Nice blog.

Karen - I imagine there is one somewhere, ot perhaps a restaurant that serves some Cuban dishes. Good luck - it's worth it.
