OK... So I went to a wedding last night. Had to stay out WAY PAST MY BEDTIME (but that's a whole 'nuther post)
It was a beautiful church, candles, petals on the bridal runner (or whatever that thing is called that the bride walks on with her dad), tuxedos, flowers, pretty music, 6 attendants on each side. Very Beautiful all the way around.
Then we head off to the reception at a nice local hotel. There's food, drinks, dancing, toasts. Nothing all that extravagant, mind you. Probably had 250 people there.
I KNOW (because I've been the FOB (father of the bride) once in the last 12 mos and twice in the last 6 years or so...) I KNOW this thing cost at least the down payment on a nice house. Maybe a little more.
My wedding in 1974 was at the family church with a cake and punch reception on the patio outside the church. The FOB took the BRIDAL PARTY ONLY to the officers club for dinner. *probably about $6 a head back then.... and that WAS IT!
Here's my question for this esteemed group:
Have weddings just blown way out of hand both the cost and the expectation of a MASSIVE PARTY for half the planet...... or is it just me?????????

It's a Good Life !

Dennis, my wife is involved in the wedding industry as a professional ballroom dance instructor. Her company, The Wedding Dance Specialists, prepares brides and grooms for their first dance. Most of her couples spend between $250-$500 to learn the valuable skill of dancing. Usually less expensive than the wedding cake, which is a very fleeting luxury.
We attend and advertise her business at the many bridal fairs. It's amazing how huge an industry the wedding sector is and how much money people spend on their weddings. I've been to weddings where the couple honestly spent over $25,000 on floral decorations alone. Absurd!
Costs certainly have gone up, but sometimes the true meaning of a wedding and a marriage are lost in all the hoopla.
