There is a very well known book called Blink. The book is authored by Malcolm Gladwell. Blink is intriguing on many levels, however, the main theme of the book is that a majority of times our snap judgments, the quick decisions we make in the first two seconds are correct. Many times, we can spend months, years, or decades collecting data, however, as often as not the initial feel we have, the sixth sense, the intuition is the best barometer.
Barker's Ridge is a neighborhood that has wonderful statistics and an excellent reputation; however, it is the special sense of community that makes Barker's Ridge special. This sense of community can be felt almost as you enter into its confines.
Barker's Ridge is located just off of Barker's Cypress, north of I-10. Like many neighborhoods started in the mid 80's Barker's Ridge was built in spurts. Barker's Ridge Place was started in 1986 and was completed around 1993. Barker's Ridge Park was completed in the in approximately 1993. Barker's Ridge Estates is just south of Morton and is comprised of larger homes and larger lots. The final phase of Baker's Ridge, Barker's Ridge - The Village was completed in 1998.
Several builders took part in building this neighborhood including Trendmaker, Plantation, Mastermark and Pulte. Located near Fry road, the neighborhood offers great access to shopping, dining and the freeways.
Recent homes sells have varied from the low $100,000 to almost $200,000. Of special note is the short period of time that homes stay on the market. Sherry Parker, a longtime resident notes that homes seem to sell quickly because of the sense of community. Residents tell their friends about the neighborhood. She noted that she knows of many families that have owned two or three homes in the neighborhood. When they wanted to upgrade homes they simply bought a larger house in Barker's Ridge.
A sense of community keeps the neighborhood together
The neighborhood boast a community pool and playground, great places to picnic, bayous to run along and plenty of places to walk your dog or go for a bike ride. Barker's Ridge is also located near Cullen Park, with running and biking trails that will soon connect all the way to Terry Hershey Park.
From one of the best designed community Web-Sites (http://www.barkersridge.org/), to the well organized neighborhood activities, to the Bunko groups, to the community fundraising events, this neighborhood offers a multitude of ways to get involved and to stay informed. Still all of the wonderful facts about the neighborhood can be matched by other neighborhoods. So what makes this neighborhood stand out?
The strongest gift that this neighborhood offers its residents and potential residents is the sense of community. Resident Sherry Parker stresses that Barker's Ridge is a neighborhood that people know each other. The residents get involved. Ms. Parker was recently named volunteer of the year by a local organization. However, she stresses that her volunteer spirit runs throughout the neighborhood.
Thousands of dollars have been raised to help residents who have battled with life threatening illnesses. Another family found themselves the caregivers for several children due to a family tragedy. The neighbors stepped up to provide assistance. Ms. Parker stresses that she knows that if she is running late or cannot get home a neighbor will step up to take on any necessary responsibility.
The neighborhood also offers a multitude of opportunities to get involved and get to know the neighbors. Falls Carnivals, Easter Egg Hunts and events at the pool offer everyone a chance to get to know each other. The local fire department has been very supportive of the community and has been involved in several community functions.
As stated in Mr. Gladwell's book, facts, stats and research are important. However, the first impression formed in seconds is important as well. Barker's Ridge has impressive statistics, but a quick drive through the neighborhood may just greet you with the warmth and sense of community that you and your family are looking for in your next home.
