CosmeticsI've heard from other REALTORS that sometimes a beautiful house on the exterior situated up a country road with gorgeous trees and the sweet smell of fresh air can turn into something else once they walk in the door. It can be a dump inside. Old dilapidated furniture, smells of the kitty litter box and a sink that hasn't been cleaned in ages.

But I want to also remind them to keep their eyes open further. One of the gifts I have been given is perception of unseen beauty. They need to tune into another sense and that is the beauty of "people." I see it ALL THE TIME!! While all of us are not the greatest housekeepers or maintenance repair folks, there are a lot of many fine people inside the walls of the dilapidated homes. They have good solid moral cores, are friendly, and would give the shirt off their backs if you asked them. So don't be so quick to stick your nose up in the air.

Elderly Person

I have always had this personal theory in life that some of the most beautiful people you will find are the very old or the very young. I think it has to do with their closeness to God either just coming from God or heading back toward God. I think there is more innocence with them and the cares of the world do not bother them so much.

So keep your eyes open for this other beauty as you walk through the halls of that new listing you are working on. It is all around you if you just take the time to see it.

Surprise Kiss

Life just has this tendency to surprise us all the time.

Gary,  very true & sweet.  I tend to believe that a beautiful soul comes from the inside & the surface is just that (surface).  I enjoy digging deeper to see their true beauty.

So true! I've often told my husband how much I appreciate getting to know new people in this business whom I might not otherwise have had an opportunity to know....they allow us to come into their lives & homes and it shouldn't be taken for granted.

Christina: True beauty is exactly what I am talking about here, you are right!

Colleen: Life is like a box of chocolates - you never know what you are going to get. That is what makes working with people so fascinating. Helps with our attention deficit as well. : )

Gary, I can always see past the clutter and what needs to be upgraded to see the potential of a home.  Kind of what Feng Shui is about so this really hit a nerve with me.

Carole: I would think a Feng Shui expert like yourself is taking organizing a house for energy levels and harmony even one step beyond what a Stager does. We need more people like you with your expertise out there. There is so much about the energy of rooms that people just don't understand but I'm a big believer in it for sure.

The old and the new people on earth remind us of the cycle of life.  A home has life stages too.  The patina of a well loved home shines through the clutter and even deferred maintenance.

Gary - Generally there does need to be some type of emotional connection, but those that can look past the "stuff" and see what they will do & its potential can be in for a real treat.

Gary:Greetings from San Francisco!

I enjoy my family here as you just said: " the most beautiful people you will find are the very old or the very young." I have them around.

I love meeting new people, both young and old.  The seasoned community has so much wisdom and guidance to offer.  On warm summer days, I LOVE sitting on the porch listening to my Grandmother talk about her youth.

Norma: I like your thought about the cycle of life, beginnings and endings.

Steve: Ah, you know about that vision thing. Very good.

Arina: You are the traveler I see. Having family around is special. Enjoy your valuable time with them.

Latonia: Pay attention to all that wisdom of a grandmother for she has seen much and learned alot.

Judy: I'm glad you recognize the contributions of the very young and very young. A wise one are you. Too many people dismiss them. I search the web for the photos and some just strike me as the right ones to pick.

Lynda: Thanks. I know you already know about "beautiful" people found in many homes. You have been at this a long time and have seen many special people. I think agents constantly need to be reminded we are in a helping profession and it is not only about moving pieces of brick and mortar.

Gary--There always is a buyer for every home listed. Some people are able to see past the clutter...some are not. Judging the person is not necessary...You really have a lot of heart!

Only 2% can see a home for what it can be and not for what it is - that could be the same for people as well.

The great thing is though that you are selling a house not the people who lived in it - so it needs to be able to be seen for one (clutter obscures vision) and appeal to a broad base of potential buyers.

That is tougher when it is still occupied.

Fred: Few words and simple questions says it all. I am going to remember that because it is so true.

Kim: Go from Hmmm to Wow. You have to see it to get to the Wow state.

Kathleen: When a home is occupied the folks living there have their taste on display. It is not easy to turn that battleship around but with some nudging and getting them to see it is a product they are selling they can be educated. Beauty in people is there all the time but it needs to be explored.

Gary - It's the people that make that house a home.  I remember when we purchased the last house we bought the owner said; "this is a happy house.  The owners before us were happy here and we've been happy here."  I was speechless, because I saw heavy and outdated - but I also saw very good bones.  The entire house needed to be updated (and it's been costly), but it is a "happy house".

Jackie: I like that expression, very good bones. And with your moving the house to an updated state you continued to make it a "happy" home. What a lovely story.

Gary,

I love the picture of the little girl putting lipstick on and the description of  the house just needing a little "lipstick". Very clever and well written post. Thank you, it is nice to be reminded not to be jaded as we often get in this business.

Gary,

I really loved this post and your perspective on beauty. It is a fact that very few people have the gift of which you speak, most people are unable to see the hidden beauty and/ potential. I was taught that approximately 95 % of people do not see beyond what they are looking at, and in terms of selling a house, how very important it is therefore to make sure the house is presentable as possible.

With respect to people, I taught myself a long time ago to always find a beautiful thing about someone, and it needn't be a physical thing, and dwell on that. Before long I find I am in love with the entire person (in love with meaning I feel great caring and connection for the person).
This skill serves me very greatly in real estate as we meet so many kinds of people and at first meeting, some people are harder to connect with than others.

Underneath it all, we are all fragile and deserve to be loved and accepted.

Patricia: I like that, the spirit of the home.

Lu: There is always beauty in people, even those you may dislike.

Holly: Don't get jaded. Stay above the fray.

Jo: Like you, I try to find something to sincerely compliment people on. It's fun to watch them. They don't expect it, like no one ever compliments them before.

Gary:  It's a gift to have a discerning spirit and seeing the beauty as you describe it so well.  I, too, can see beyond the status quo and see the potential and subsequent beauty.  I think you just explained why I've always been drawn to older people and small children (surely dogs have a place in there somewhere) LOL.  Beautiful post.

I liked your reasoning Gary.... "I think it has to do with their closeness to God either just coming from God or heading back toward God." there is alot of truth in that ! Beauty comes from within and the greatest gift we can try and share with others is how something CAN look, not it's present state :)

Awesome Post

Sincerely,

Grace

Grace: Another thing I've noticed if you can see unseen beauty is to point it out to those that don't know they "HAVE IT". We are all in this together, and making people aware is something we can help each other with.

gary, I love this post, so many times I use to get caught up in the smells of my grandmothers home and forget to enjoy her.  It seemed everything in her place smelled old, and why shouldn't it, now that I think about it. And to be honest I would love the opportunity to go back to those days, I would appreciate them more.

David: You have to see and pick up on that beauty fast sometimes because it can be fleeting.

Kevin & Monica: I think a lot of seeing is just slowing down and giving something more time and attention.
