The importance of Meta Tags
A web page description is used by search engines to help them determine what a page is about and to help them know what to display in search engine results. The description is not visible to the user because it is placed in what is called a meta tag. A meta tag is html that is included in the header of a page and basically sits in the background when a page is viewed.
Here is a very simple html example. Note the "Real Estate Agent Web Design - SEO for Descriptions." That text is in the meta tag named "description".
<html>
<head>
<title></title>
<META NAME="description" CONTENT="Real Estate Agent Web Design - SEO for Descriptions.">
<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="">
<META name="classification" content="">
</head>
<body>
</body>
</html>
SEO for Descriptions
Each page needs a specific topic. The title should be a brief topic title of the page and the description a concise summary or thesis. Web masters want to simply describe what you want people to see in search result and make sure that is what the content of the page says. Choose a few key words and write a couple/few brief sentenses. Typically, the more focused the better.
