Ever wanted to go green? ...to make a smaller impact on your local environment?
Concerned about local water issues? ...just don't know what you can do?
There are many ways to get involved, and many small, simple things everyone of us can do to make a difference - one of the coolest, is to install a rain water collection system at your home.
The easiest way to do this - and probably the best way to get into it as a beginner - is to install a single rain barrel.
This can be done by making one, or even simpler yet, purchasing one (go to Sustainable Big Bend on Monroe street to buy one for about $65).
Get your barrel home. Then head on down to Home Depot, Lowes, or a local hardware store that carries rain gutters and associated equipment. Pick up a few small adaptors suited to your situation - you will need to run your gutter drain into the top of the barrel.
You are now ready to set it up.
Your rain barrel should be located where it is not in the way. It should be placed where you can easily run the gutter drain into it, and where it is accessible to use for watering the yard. You should also be sure that it is not in danger of tipping, especially if you have children. the last thing to be concerned about, is to make sure that you completely screen in the top so that mosquitoes do not have access to the collected, standing water...
Once it is in, call your friends, neighbors, and associates... have a Barby! Brag big time about how cool your yard is and what you are doing for the planet. Enjoy.
