Long Grove combines rural charm and suburban convenience.

"The Village with the charm of  yesteryear" is how Long Grove is described. More than 100 retail businesses consisting of antique shops, specialty shops, restaurants housed in  Victorian-era houses and barns are clustered around the intersection of Old McHenry Road and Robert Coffin Road. The Village strives to preserve its pristine rural charm as it retains large open spaces and extensive natural groves of trees.

In the town of Long Grove, you will find quaint shopping, great restaurants and great boutiques.  Just a few miles away, you can find other fine shopping in Deer Park or Hawthorn Mall  in Vernon Hills.  Long Grove residents are served by the Long Grove, Lake Zurich and Buffalo Grove Park District which has a long menu of events and activities for children, adults, and seniors.

CNN in its recent Money Magazine article  reported Long Grove, Illinois  as the 24th suburb out of 25 for the highest median household  income in the United States.

Judy - I attended Barat College that was located in Lake Forest DECADES AGO! I was away from the Chicago area for 30 years, but visit there several times a year now. 2 years ago I spent Christmas in St. Charles, somewhere around that area, I think... I love the atmosphere of the north side A LOT. What a wonderful, wintry photo of that covered bridge...

We moved to Long Grove in 1952, when there were 400 people in the Kildeer School District.  We lived in Willowbrook Woods, at the corner of Rt 22 and Willowbrook Rd.  I was serving as President of the Long Grove Civic Association when we voted to incorporate as the Village of Long Grove, under the laws of the State of Illinois.  I was appointed to Chair the new Planning Commission, which implemented the desires of the community as to the style of development that would occur.  I held that position for 13 years. through the struggle with Joseph M, Brickman.  Fronting for the Chicago Crime Syndicate, he had a develpment scheme for laundering syndicate money.  His partner, Sal Dimucci, was brother-in-law to Tony Accardo.  I think it took 4 years to defeat him,  Doing so required that Long Grove sponsored and supported the formation of the communities of Kildeer, Deer Park and Hawthorn Woods.   We were the first to re-introduce Natiive Prairie to the area.  It was on our property, adjoining that of Bob Coffin, that the thought-tobe-extinct Habaneria  Leucphieia [Great White Prairie Orchid ] was discovered in 1960.

Now I have lived in  Southern California since 1976,  I am awed by the way Long Grove has developed.   Hal Wilder

Thanks Hal for commenting on my website.  I can't believe it had only 400 people in it in 1952.   I used to come to Long Grove when I was a little girl and it was like a day trip from Skokie.  Now its just a small ride on the expressway.  The good thing about Long Grove is that the trustees always reserved the  wonderful character of this quaint  village.

Hi Judy,

I'm Hal Wilder's son. By dumb luck/coincidence (?ha!), I just happened to find your site, and my Dad's comments. What he said was, of course, all true.

I went to first grade at Kildeer-Countryside School all the way thru 8th grade. High School was in Lake Zurich in 1960. After College, I migrated o Chicago for 28 years, and now I've been in California since '92.

Long Grove was (and IS!) an amazing place to grow up. It had lots and lots of the 'American Grafitti-coming-of-age' experiences typical for Baby Boomers in the 1950's and 60's.

One of the things my Dad didn't say was that the Zoning Commission is exactly what protects the beautiful Long Grove area from being ravaged by unbounded growth. At least I HOPE that is still true. I haven't been back since '91. I have witnessed (via the internet mostly) LG's major growth and change. I trust the local LG culture is still a respite for the maddening urban pace.

I was lucky to grow up there, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that experience to future lucky residents!

You offered GREAT INFO on this post! Thanks! - Scott
