I am not a "hard sell" person.  I'm seriously uncomfortable with that approach and I do not appreciate it when others try to "hard sell" me.  Frankly, it's a turn off.  Do you feel the same way?

But there are hundreds of opportunities to "gently" let people that you come into contact with every day know you are a REALTOR®...WEAR YOUR NAME BADGE AND REALTOR® PIN.

Name BadgeDO wear your badge/pin wherever you go during the day.  This might include:

•1.       Grocery shopping

•2.      PTA meetings

•3.      Car wash

•4.      School athletic events

•5.      Post office

•6.      Mall shopping/browsing

•7.      Hair salon

•8.      Pedicure/Manicure salon

•9.      Coffee shop

•10.  Homeowners association meetings

The wearing of your name badge is soft sell all the way.  You'd be surprised at the number of total strangers who will see it and strike up a conversation with you about the current market.  Wearing your badge is a great segue leading into a comfortable conversation about real estate in general and, of course, it's another opportunity to get your business card into someone's hand.

I still don't know if this is true but I had a trainer tell me that your name badge should always be worn on your right side because most people will shake your right hand with their right hand - and there's your name/affiliation directly in their line of sight.

handshake

Stay open and alert to these opportunities - they are out there.

PS:  I remember when I first began wearing my name badge outside of the office.  I was standing in line at the post office and there was a handsome gentleman in front of me who actually kept turning around to look at me.  I thought, "Hey, this badge thing really works.  He's going to ask me a real estate question - I just know it!."  I was SO excited. After three or four times of him turning around to me, he finally turned one final time and said to me, "I just have to ask you something."  I said, "Sure, how can I help you?"  He said, "Did you know your name badge is upside down?"

Geez...

I believe that when you handloe the "relationship" properl;y, there is a time to get down to business. If I know that I am about to pitched, I would rather have them get to the point instead of pussy footing around it. I thihnk you need to be able to understand the personalities of those you are trying to sell. If they are detail people ... just give me the facts kind of people, they want someone to get to the point, people that are not that way dont like to be sold that way. It really is a matter of being a horse of different colors with every individual you meet.

To your success!

Susan

Yes.  Wear the pin, anything to let people know you are in real estate.  I am thinking of ordering a name badge for everyone in my office.

Aloha Peggy:

I laughed at the Post office story.  Good one.  Our Team Leader at Keller Williams Realty Maui every week reminds us to wear those name badges.  I must admit I am not always the best at remembering to put it on.  Last week 2 of our agents picked up new business due to wearing their name tags.  It works!

I notice when I am wearing it "out" (like poping into a store, etc.) that people read it. Not one person has ever asked me yet, but they read it. Next time I catch someone reading it, I will check to make sure it is right side up!

HaHaHa...I have actually heard of wearing a name badge upside down on purpose!  The idea is to get people to tell you that it is upside down, so you can laugh and start up a conversation!

I had to wear a name badge for so many years that it's hard to actually do it on purpose!

I'm a firm believer in Name Badge wearing.  I wear it or a RE/MAX Balloon pin everywhere I go, dressed up or not.  Cute story about the upside down Name Tag!

I have a name badge I wear on my ski coat.  I have had lots of people who ask about real estate while riding up the gondola.

Wow Peggy!  That post office story had me laughing till the tears came.  I could just envision that happening to me!  I'd have been mortified.

And you are so right - wear your name tag everywhere.  People will, and DO, ask you questions and don't feel that they are being "sold" on anything.

Hi everyone, thanks for stopping by and commenting.  I definitely believe in the power of the badge.  You have to try it to believe it!

Scott - I agree with you.  Anything that "gently" lets people know what you do for a living.  Thanks!

Peggy, very good post. Lately I haven't been using the name badge too often. Thank you for reminding us to use this inexpensive marketing gadget at every opportunity. As our trainer liked to say "are you a secret agent? put on your name badges and tell the world you are a real estate agent!"

Griselda, with marketing costs what they are, the lowly name badge is an effective tool.  Thanks!

All 3 of us wear our name badges throughout the entire day.  You just never know hwen someone is going to ask you a real estate question.  We have been stopped in restaraunts, grocery stores & gas stations to mention a few places.

Brian, it's true...a "soft" way to get the conversation going...thanks for your comment!

The post office story is hilarious . . . but hey, that could be a great ploy to get folks to notice it!  LOL

I constantly remind our agents to where their name tags . . . AND to get in the longest line at the grocery store (to allow more time for conversations).  Folks talk to me about real estate all of the time because of the name tag.

Thanks!

Great tip!  I like to wear my Realtor pin if I'm not wearing my name badge.

Hi Peggy

I was goggling! to find out where I could have a name badge made for just that purpose and came across your article... thanks for the tips, I guess it really can be worn anywhere anytime.  Its also a great ice breaker when working trade shows are just meeting people in general.

HAVE A FAB DAY

Peggy - I know many agents who have gotten business from wearing their badges.  hasn't happened to me yet, but that day may come.
