Friday will go down as a great day in the history of Mobile.  As a resident of the Atlanta area back in the early Northgrop Grumman EADS Mobile wins contract90's I remember the excitement when it was announced that Atlanta was going to be host of the 1996 Olympics.  Here in Mobile, the feeling was very similar on Friday afternoon.  Like the Olympics announcement was for Atlanta, the announcement that Northrop Grumman/EADS won the contract to build Air Force tankers was a suprise both locally and nationally.

Friday was a culmination of lots of hard work for the folks involved.  Special thanks go to our government leaders, Governor Bob Riley, Senator Jeff Sessions and US Rep Jo Bonner and Mayor Sam Jones and our leaders on the City Commission and County Commission.  Our Chamber of Commerce deserves special thanks as well for a job well done.

Last May when it was announced that Thyssen Krupp was going to build a large steel plant in north Mobile County, it was thought that it was a once in a generation type of announcement.  Friday's announcement is even better news.  Mobile has a chance to become the boomtown of the Southeast.  Its location as a deep water port along the central Gulf Coast makes it very attractive to industries looking to relocate.  Mobile has a chance to become a leader in the aerospace industry.

It's really big news for Mobile and a continuation of the positive signals that we keep getting. Mobile is now on the map for both national and international developers as a location for new investments.  Friday's announcement was great but it was only the beginning of further big changes for our local economy.
